Who did Monica Dolan play in Call the Midwife?
She's a great actress, isn't she?
And a good choice for a non-leading role. I liked her in The Bigger Picture though.
What is Meryl Streep's next project? I think she'll be playing some evil woman in Thor 2. I agree with you that Ms Dolan has a fantastic ability to create an authentic world in many films. I also like her on the tv series, Desperate Housewives.
With the exception of Julie Walters who seems to have a knack for non-acting, most actors in Britain have no such gift. Their lack of talent is what has made them stars. There have been exceptions of course and a few people who seem to do it naturally; for instance the late great Bill Paterson. I think we might say that Monica Dolan is very nearly born again in that she is able to "create" the period so convincingly.
That said, the casting has been pretty bad throughout. A recent example was the casting of a young boy as Michael Gambon in a film version of Sense and Sensibility. Who can name another film star cast with such a childlike appearance? Why was he cast? He simply looked too young for the character - which the script surely did not require anyway? It would be nice if someone could tell us why they felt that the casting was necessary and what effect the choice has had.
Perhaps, I'll stop rambling and tell you more about my TV viewing today. I saw this episode of Downton Abbey first. The show can be very slow at times and so this episode took a while but I think it did it quite well. Some good acting and fine writing to round it off.
The episode "Dinner Party" which I watched about a week or so ago is available now to download from Amazon UK. For some reason it's very slow and when it finally starts it finishes very quickly. The end credits are really annoying. The plot had some very odd elements, not least the fact that Daisy seemed to be almost falling in love with Mr G. It was kind of out of the blue when he suddenly asked if she liked him. Then it got completely mad when Lord G. Came into the room looking for Daisy. The only thing that was nice about it was the scene between Mrs Hughes and Lady Violet. Both were very good. Even Mr G was kind to Daisy there.
Who played the twin sisters in Call the Midwife?
Sarah Woodward - Jane and Ruth.
Minnie Driver - Biddy. Francesca Annis - Mary. Ayelet Zurer - Edna. Julia Davis - Annie. The BBC has released the photos of this week's episode on Christmas Day. Check out Kate Maberly, as she helps Ruth try to make her first appearance at the local Christmas Fayre. The cast and crew at the filming studio at Shepperton today:
