Is it OK to use VPN for Amazon Prime?
(Hint: no)
For the time being, Amazon's video service is not available in all of Canada. Although Prime Video works on any device, including iPhones and iPads, if you can't get it to work then it is worth considering that it might because you are using a device that is not compatible with Amazon's servers. In my case I wanted to use Amazon's free video streaming service, Amazon Prime, on my iPhone, which is unable to access Amazon Video unless it is downloaded to a computer, and then the Apple TV device that also requires connection to a computer or a Kindle Fire tablet. However, I knew that VPN would mean that I could access Amazon's Prime Video service on my iPhone from anywhere on the planet, and that's exactly what happened. So I thought that I would share the steps for how to get Prime Video on your iPhone from Canada.
A note about how this method works: I did this on an iPhone 6, as did most other VPN users I have spoken to. However, many have stated that this was the same approach that worked for them.
If you are using an iPhone 5, iPad Air, 4th generation iPod touch, or 3rd gen iPod touch you will need to download and install the VPN app called Hotspot Shield. You can download this app for free from the App Store. As you wait for it to install, launch your iPhone's Settings, locate the General > Restrictions and turn on App downloads over Wi-Fi only. Once Hotspot Shield has been installed and you have connected it to your iPhone, go to www.amazon.com/prime. To view the Prime Video service you will need to choose it from the drop down menu where you can find more information about the service. Once it is available you will see Prime Video On Demand right underneath the What's New section. Click Play Video and then start streaming.
To test that the service works for you go to www.kimsufi.ca and type in Prime Video On Demand into the search bar. Then if you click on the link that comes up in the results it should lead you to the correct location on Amazon.
Why is ExpressVPN not working on Amazon Prime Video?
Why does Amazon Prime Video (Prime Video for USA) not work with ExpressVPN? I have recently migrated to an Amazon Fire TV stick, and a year ago after testing a VPN (Private Internet Access) to watch Netflix shows on that, I switched back and forth between using my US server and using PIA's German server which I used with Netflix in the past. But lately the stream has been choppy/laggy on Amazon TV devices and also Netflix. It was more choppy on Amazon TV than other devices but that can be hard to say since it is hard to control variables for TV-based streaming but I think that is it possible to give some good insight into this matter. I have not tried it with Prime Video since Amazon bought Prime Video since PIA still supports it, but the last time I checked, they had not yet implemented some of the functionality as with PIA before they got owned by Amazon. But I think, now that Amazon has Prime Video, things are pretty much done. So do you think PIA will have these functionalities before Amazon? Or if not, will it take a while?
There are already great answers explaining why ExpressVPN didn't work on Netflix from the USI'll just list the differences and point you to those answers. We're all very happy you're switching away from Private Internet Access and instead choosing us to fulfill your online streaming needs. Now even Netflix customers in the USA can access the unlimited free VPN service we provide. (If Netflix is your only online streaming need, you probably shouldn't consider VPN.) But when you use our free service, your connection won't count towards your monthly data allowance with other online services (that's what keeps your unlimited data plan safe).
The problem here is not that you can't get to PIA's website, or that you've already started the installation of ExpressVPN. What's happening is that your ISP recognizes you're taking down from ExpressVPN by adding an "on-link" prefix to every DNS address you're going to attempt to resolve to the US Netflix site. They detect the VPN on-link packet and try to redirect you to Netflix's own page for your region. That redirect happens because you're taking down from their website; not from Netflix's US site.
