Kong Mesh is a mesh network project, created by Kong developers at Alibaba Cloud with the goal of providing high-performance and reliable service to IoT devices.

Kong Mesh has been incubating since mid-2015. In the same period, Kong itself grew from 8 to over 2,000 members in the Github organization. As the number of users increased, they also have submitted many issues (including bugs) to be addressed. And now Kong Mesh, after working for 1 year, finally reached the final version, as well as became a mature open-source project! In this series, we will share our experiences during incubation and the final release.

The first time that Kong Mesh was proposed on Github, I got angry. One of the most commonly seen problem is how to solve the problem of the node's registration and address reuse, which has many issues. Especially in a large scale, it is very difficult for a small device to obtain a unique address without the help of DNS. If your idea is that there are a lot of tiny devices and they should share a gateway, you think you can just share the address to another device and then have two devices talk to each other. However, in reality, there will be serious address duplication as some smart devices may already be busy, and only one person can have only one address at any given time. That's why many projects, such as Zigbee or WiFi-Mesh, need external servers to provide the registration service and a centralized DHCP to assign nodes addresses. In the process, a large amount of data traffic will accumulate at the central server, so we can hardly deny that there are many problems in this direction.

Of course, the reason that led to the proposal of Kong Mesh could not have been found if there had not been any users of Kong Mesh in Alibaba Cloud. The project's incubation happened to be supported by the Alibaba Cloud Platform, where a number of members of Kong's own support staff had been working.

As we all know, this type of project belongs to the type of hardware products, and is not a kind of product that has to compete with the existing open-source project. Therefore, the incubation period is actually a key test of your own product. The team also experienced a lot of changes on its own.
