How do I access dynamic DNS?

I'd like to be able to access my dynamic DNS names without having to use the browser.

Is there a program that can do that? Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox have built-in DNS resolvers that can resolve dynamic DNS records. These are disabled by default and can be enabled using about:flags.

To manually resolve DNS records of a domain, you can either run your own DNS resolver with a resolver library or use a DNS server with built-in support for dynamic records. What is a dynamic DNS IP address?

There are two types of Dynamic DNS services; Free and Paid.

Free Dynamic DNS services provide free domain name registration and are typically found in smaller sites. They also do not provide hosting or web design and usually sell email accounts (eg GMail, YMail, Hotmail, etc.) which would seem to make them useless for most SMB's.

How does Dynamic DNS work? It works by simply providing an IP address for your website; instead of showing your customers the typical web address that is static on your site. You can set it in your web host control panel (I use cPanel as a way of example here) as well as directly on the site. This provides a lot of benefits for your customers because they now can browse to and see your website! As we discussed above, this can give your potential customers the impression that you have more experience/resources than you really do.

Let's take a look at an example: You have a business that sells T-Shirts that are in stock, so your site would have a "static" domain name, such as sales.com. Your customers come to your site and they can not find the T-Shirts they are looking for, even if you provide a good selection and offer sales (as well as support). So you want to change it to a domain name service with a dynamic DNS that uses a paid service like www.dyndns. This service allows you to change your domain name to any site you want, including one that does not already have a domain name associated with it. Instead of: sales.com, you could change it to: www.mycustomersite. Your customers can now easily navigate to www.com and even make purchases. Not only is this much easier on your customer, it will also increase conversions.

There was some discussion in the server chat about this and I thought there might be useful information on this subject. Do I want to allow people to connect to my services with names provided by the dynamic DNS client? Should I block that functionality from the web console, instead of having no control over the dynamic DNS client? Are there disadvantages to having this option enabled? Would you recommend turning this option on for anyone accessing your services? There is no reason to have DNSBLs as part of the DDNS if it's not to a DNS service of their own as you've described. The DNSBL could either redirect DNS requests back to a real IP for the service or they'd block DNS requests completely. These services wouldn't see your DDNS as a valid name.

For example, if you have a "homebrewcloud" running you could use dnsbl.net (I think it's available via FiddlerCore which you'd need anyway). All DNS requests would be forwarded.

If it's an external DDNS you're hosting then you'd do a little more work as you'd need a DNS server. For dynamic DNS providers that's usually their own domain or subdomain but I wouldn't recommend blocking this as a way of protecting your DNS servers and other stuff.

For public services - don't need a dynamic DNS client, and never turn on for your services. It's not safe at all.

For private services - make sure your registrar/whois is using the right DNSSEC records. If it doesn't you can't have full DNSSEC protection and your client will fail any lookup that doesn't match. If you do have those the public will then fail on any domain that doesn't match too - which is fine for public services but you shouldn't have to rely on clients failing to resolve your domain.
