How do I make my Mac a personal hotspot?
My friend has a Macbook pro and loves to use his hotspot but wants it to be shared so the hotspot doesn't drop.
We had a windows computer but he decided to stop using it and use the mac (i don't think he knew how to do the hotspot before and needed help).
The issue is how can he share his Hotspot in order for other people to use it? No this is not an AT&T hotspot as I cannot connect to my phone, I cannot use AT&T as my carrier. There is no other service that I can use with my phone.
I just want to ask about this, any other advice on this would also be appreciated. 1 Answer. If your friend was able to get it working, you have probably already tried this with a different type of router that the Macs used to connect to the Internet. Unfortunately, Apple does not publish a list of models that work with their OSes.
You can try two strategies to get it working: Connect directly to a cable modem at the home-side of your broadband connection using either an Ethernet cable or WiFi router and set up your phone on the other end. (This will generally result in fewer dropped connections because the network will be more reliable and less affected by problems farther down the chain.)
Try setting up a guest account on your Mac and use it to connect to your friends hotspot so he won't be connected to the Internet at all. There's really no reason why his computer would be a personal hotspot, it's not a very useful feature.
To do either of these things, you will need to have access to the router that connects your broadband connection to the Internet. It would normally have several ports (usually four) labeled WAN/LAN/Internet, and Vlan. Depending on how your router works, you might only be able to use one of the ports to connect to the Internet, but it's worth a try to see if that works.
If you're just trying to get some quick and dirty help for someone else, and there are no other technical solutions, it's just easier to buy an AT&T data plan (or maybe T-Mobile or other carrier) to give you the freedom of having a real hotspot without dealing with the hassle of setting it up yourself.
How do I turn my Mac into a WiFi hotspot app?
There are many ways to create a hotspot with your wireless Mac, including third-party apps and the built-in Mac WiFi Assistant.
For this article we're looking at what Apple provides, which is easier but less powerful. The steps below are for those using macOS Sierra 10.12.4 or newer.
Steps. Open up System Preferences and click on Wi-Fi.e. Select 802.11ac from the Which drop-down menu.
Make sure the Wi-Fi hotspot option is turned on. Select the SSID (network name) you'll be using. Enter the password for the network. That's it! The process will take place in the background while you use the computer, so you won't notice anything out of the ordinary. The screen will turn black and you'll see the status bar flash when the hotspot is established.
You may need to reboot the Mac to finish the process, but that's not necessary. More about Mac WiFi.e. What about iOS devices? WiFi on your Mac can be a great way to share your internet with your iOS device, so you'll be able to connect to the Internet using that device and access services like iCloud. Just follow the same steps, but you don't have to set up a hotspot for an iOS device. All the settings and security are already configured for you.
If you'd like to create a hotspot for an iOS device, download the free Hotspot Shield app. You'll still need to set up your WiFi hotspot manually, but Hotspot Shield helps you through the process.
Can you create a Wi-Fi to WiFi hotspot from a Mac?
My iPad needs an Internet connection and I don't have a Mac.
Any way to create a Wi-Fi hotspot from my Mac so my iPad can connect to it, without needing to plug anything into my Mac, or is this only possible if I already have a router? I know that I can enable WPA and DHCP on my Verizon router but the problem is that my Internet connection doesn't have any of that so how does my phone and iPad make a wifi hotspot that can use my data connection? If it isn't possible to do this from the router you will have to buy one right? In iOS 7, when you connect to another AirPort base station via Wi-Fi, a wireless switch appears between them so that they share the same network name. That means that when you turn your iPhone into an AirPort base station, you could tell your other iOS devices to connect to the same hotspot via Wi-Fi.
To do this, follow these steps: Open Settings. Tap Wi-Fi.e. Choose 'AirPort Base Station' for the network name. Tap the Wi-Fi button in the top right of the screen, then tap Create New Network. (see image below) Tap the device name which you would like to connect to the new hotspot. If it was successful, you will see a network name next to the device. To connect to that hotspot, go to the phone that is connected to the hotspot and turn it into an AirPort base station. If you wish to connect different devices to the same hotspot, keep turning them into base stations until all the connected devices see that same network name.
I am trying to get the app called My WiFi Passport working but I am running into a serious speed issue in iOS. My MacBook Pro i5 3.2GHz processor and Macbook Pro i7 3.2GHz processor are able to stream audio at 192k and play videos with little to no distortion and delay. My iPad mini is not able to do that at all no matter what settings I change.
