I used it constantly, though not often outside of my normal data-heavy activities.

When I first tried the app, I wasn't asked to provide any credit card information, and in fact, none was asked for by ProtonVPN during the month. I just entered a valid email address. The email verification required when you purchase a paid subscription is done via email, not text message.
