Is Proton VPN really free?
A while back, I used a test VPN service called ProtonVPN. For a week I experienced the fastest mobile data speeds available while using it on my tablet and phone. The service offered a 30 day free trial period, so I thought I'd go back to get some feedback and see if they've changed their business model or practices.
The Free ProtonVPN offers unlimited data, unlimited computers (iOS, MacOS, Android), a browser extension, unlimited server switches, and unlimited servers. They've also got two levels of subscription to choose from: a Lite and a Plus level. They are very upfront about the Lite version of the app being intended for light use, but the Plus version they sell as offering a lot more features than you get in the free version.
My concerns are that while they're trying to be upfront about the limitations, they are going after enterprise customers and trying to sell them the Plus package. In short, there are no free lunches, but the ProtonVPN team seems to be selling that Lite version as something special that allows you to get more than the typical free service.
My initial impressions of ProtonVPN when I first downloaded the app were favorable. Everything worked well from connecting to servers, opening website pages, downloading files, video streaming, and using the app while in flight. I used it constantly, though not often outside of my normal data-heavy activities.
When I first tried the app, I wasn't asked to provide any credit card information, and in fact, none was asked for by ProtonVPN during the month. I just entered a valid email address. The email verification required when you purchase a paid subscription is done via email, not text message.
There were a few speed hiccups from time to time, especially when trying to download large videos and files.
What devices can I use with Proton VPN?

How do I update my profile? All ProtonVPN data centres are online 24/7, so there is no need to worry about manual profile updates. Just keep your account login details secure.
Which ProtonVPN countries are eligible for free VPN? ProtonVPN currently offers four regions in its free VPN package. More countries are coming soon. This means that they could soon be able to reach over 150 countries when paid. But if you want to get the best experience now, there's a few simple things you can do.
Make sure your web browser supports the necessary protocols to use any of the free VPN servers. If it doesn't, it will try to use a free VPN service and most likely fail. We recommend you check your settings and ensure your software supports VPN protocols like OpenVPN and PPTP. Check this guide to finding free VPN IP address location information.
Does your free VPN server require a manual setup? No. Once you log into your ProtonVPN account, you'll see your IP address and region. You'll know whether your free VPN is working by seeing the Server Info section above your connection information, which includes country, region, server and last time connected.
If you have problems accessing any of the servers in your free VPN, you'll need to ask support for the specific provider. You might be able to change your user settings to ensure that your connection works. For example, you might want to restrict your bandwidth and/or change your preferred server.
I've tried to connect to my free VPN server and I can't find the option. You'll need to have an active account and connection to the server and check your preferences first. Click the link in the Server Info section. You'll see your location, protocol, port and DNS server. This should tell you whether you're able to access the server or not. If you aren't able to connect, you'll have to contact support.
Is Proton VPN safe to use?
ProtonVPN is a free VPN service. The main difference between ProtonVPN and other free VPN services is that the company has a clear policy on logging. ProtonVPN only logs the connection IP, which allows you to be completely anonymous.
ProtonVPN has a strict no-logging policy. ProtonVPN only logs connection information such as the IP address. There is no centralized database of users or their information.
It has never been easier to mask your identity online. In this ProtonVPN review, we'll walk you through all the benefits of using ProtonVPN for free.
The Pros. The ProtonVPN software is free to use. You get unlimited bandwidth, the ability to create up to five VPN connections, and unlimited server switching.
There are no data caps, no usage limits and no hidden fees. The Free VPN Service. ProtonVPN provides an excellent service for free. It is compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS. With their free VPN, you get a secure network connection, unblock geo-restricted websites and access to private content and servers.
Uncensored internet access. No data caps or usage limits. No payment is required. They offer unlimited data transfer and server switching. When you create a ProtonVPN free account, you get unlimited bandwidth. The service also doesn't charge you for any data caps or usage limits. This makes it the perfect VPN to use if you're looking for unblock websites or access to private content.
You can connect to the ProtonVPN servers from Windows, macOS, Linux, and mobile devices. Your connection is secured with strong AES 256-bit encryption.
It's a great alternative to paid VPN services because of its simplicity and privacy. Free ProtonVPN offers many different countries. From Europe, the United States, and South America, you can connect from over 130 locations.
The Cons. The main disadvantage of ProtonVPN is that you can only connect to their servers from their own network. That means that you can't connect to the servers from outside of the United States.
What we like about ProtonVPN is that they don't log your IP address. This helps to keep your identity anonymous. But what happens when you run out of space on your ProtonVPN account?
Is Proton VPN trustworthy?
This depends on what you are looking for from a VPN service, is this trustworthy enough? Would it help me out in avoiding malicious traffic and keep me safe in my browsing experience. What kind of questions should I ask? I don't want to get myself into trouble. I don't know enough about what is going on and how the VPN can actually work, let alone if it will be detrimental to my privacy or not. Will it work on non-Mac devices, and should I have an understanding of the technical side of how this works to make it work with me? Do they have enough money behind them to keep maintaining the servers and doing customer service for long? Have they released enough information about their server locations and protocols that would help me get a feel for what they do to help their users get more secure and private browsing?
Are there other free services out there? I've used VPN services before, but I always felt uncomfortable about them. Is the security and privacy as good with those that are free? Will they get closed down at any time? Is it free, and is it trustworthy? Will they just take my information and leave me unprotected? These are some of the things that bother me about free VPN services.
The fact is that you're trusting a complete stranger and a for profit company when you connect to a VPN. If you're a paranoid user then you can use Tor to browse privately, otherwise why use a VPN service? You might be willing to trust a provider based on their name and reputation, but what if they fail you, go out of business, sell your data, or leave your IP address open and you lose your privacy.
Personally, I'd avoid any free service. But if I'm going to use a service, a paid subscription is my number one preference. I don't mind paying for a quality service and I'm sure many people do. I do however like to keep it low so I don't get swindled too much.
So you're saying that I should be more cautious in general, when I use VPN services to browse the web or when I browse private websites or use P2P applications? Your best bet here is to pick a provider and get comfortable with it. If you're using Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc. Then just continue with your normal browsing.

Is NordVPN better than Proton VPN?
As you probably know, NordVPN is one of the most popular VPNs on the market. And, given its price and user base, it's also one of the most commonly suggested as an alternative to ProtonVPN, which is more expensive but also has much bigger name recognition. So, let's compare NordVPN with ProtonVPN in order to find out which one should be your first choice.
However, we are going to make a major difference: when we talk about the best VPN overall, we will always look at all the criteria that makes it better than the others. Thus, the results of our analysis are not a yes/no, and we will provide some pros and cons for each product. But, remember, in this comparison, we will analyze the main features of both the products: speed, safety, cost, and trust. If we talk about the cost, it's not necessary that you'll get all the features for free; that will depend on the plan you choose.
Also, we know the most important thing in a VPN is security, but that does not mean that you should go with the cheapest one. The right choice should depend on your needs. As a rough rule of thumb, we'll assume that you don't have any issues, and it's safe enough to use VPN with all of your usual online activities.
NordVPN vs ProtonVPN. Cost. We've already said that they both are quite similar in price.99/month.
In addition, NordVPN claims to be one of the more affordable VPNs on the market, but we can say it definitely isn't the cheapest VPN. That's not surprising because they're a premium VPN company with thousands of users.
What I really like about NordVPN is the fact that they offer a free plan; thus, their price per month is far below other providers. At the same time, however, if you decide to stick with it, there's a pretty steep price to pay for the features.
The ProtonVPN offers three plans with various prices. Unfortunately, they are a little bit higher than the competitors.
