Why do Twitter links not open in the app?

I'm a happy user of the iPad version of Twitter.

But why do you have to open these links in Safari instead of the app? It's a bit annoying when you get a direct tweet from another user, say it's a picture of a beautiful scene or other interesting content and you click the link - what happens is that you open the Twitter app but then get redirected back to Safari to view the image. This doesn't happen if you navigate to the same URL in the Safari browser.

It makes sense to use Safari as the browser for twitter.com, since most folks on the site are using it in that way, but for links that are embedded from elsewhere on the web (via a retweet, like etc), we should use the native app to consume those links as well.

It seems Twitter.com works fine, so you can go and click links there without anything going wrong. I'm wondering if its not just me being silly or is there a genuine reason for it.

We need the ability to view a link as it is intended to be consumed from the page which sent it. We shouldn't have to redirect to Safari or whatever just to view a link. That's what Safari was meant to do, but now it serves the sole purpose of making us click to use the native Twitter app even when that's not the best experience.

I would say this is a very common complaint/idea and it's been discussed at length by the Twitter team themselves. It is definitely not something they are blind to. My hope is that the iPad version may help with better cross-platform support, but no promises.

I wouldn't argue with you that people shouldn't be using Safari, but I think you'll find that most people actually do end up using the Safari browser for that because that's how they're trained to use the OS. I have the same issue, however the majority of tweets I receive are links and I can go directly to the link in twitter without re-routing. The fact that Safari must be used when consuming these links is very annoying to me. Even the most basic of links are going to redirect me to the safari browser.

That's easy. Twitter web page is using AJAX to update it's HTML. So you need to use a library for AJAX, such as jQuery, which has .load() function.load(');

Where #target is the id of the div that you want to load with Twitter web page. You also need to add jQuery library on your page if it's not loaded yet.

How can I get links opened in an app instead of in a browser window?

It's not for something like Facebook. The links I use for the most part are ones with a bit more detail as I'm using it as a blog. They tend to be long and have lots of images so I feel that they're much better on an iPad. It's great when using other apps but you can only do one thing at a time. I also use a PC tablet. When the PC tablet is closed, I have both apps open but when the PC tablet opens it only opens one. I'd love to be able to keep them both up and maybe open links in the right one depending on what apps I'm using.
