On Friday, 9 October 2025, GitHub updated its support pages with the following information about connecting to GitHub with public proxies, as per a comment by github.com user @jasonwryan in the official GitHub Issues topic "How to Use GitHub.com with Proxy Servers".

When connecting to GitHub.com via a proxy server with non-SSL credentials (as of September 22, 2019): GitHub will not automatically choose the proxy settings for you. Instead, GitHub uses a variety of methods to determine the location from which the connection is being made: Network IP address and hostname. Google DNS name resolution. GitHub Pages URLs (GitHub.io, GitHub.com, GitHub.co, )

CloudFlare URL resolution (see documentation about this feature). HTTP User-Agent header field. Host header field. Some HTTP headers that may be sent by GitHub servers in the X-Client-User-Agent header are also used (see section 3 of GitHub REST API - OAuth 2.0 client credentials grant).

Note: After the update, GitHub will no longer use Google DNS name resolution (as explained in the above paragraph), but only the Network IP address and hostname and CloudFlare URL resolution. Original post on: August 26, 2025. There are certain situations where you may not have internet access for the first time or during an operation. In these situations, you may need to configure your Git clients to work through public proxies.

Here are the steps to configure a Git client to use public proxies: Step 1: Setup a GitHub account. This is going to change! As of March 2025, all Git clients will no longer use Google DNS (or other DNS records) to resolve DNS names. Instead, they will resolve using the network's IP address or via HTTP/1.1 "Host" headers (which can be useful for mobile devices as a second option, in addition to checking the hostname). We're updating for this because when we initially launched Host, we had not adequately understood this change, or the impact it could have on people using our clients and services.

Does Psiphon also work through the proxy setting on your router?

Are the servers proxied in your LAN as well? (If you do have a proxy set up, please add your info to this question and explain what you are doing). I'm asking because it is worth noting that when you enter psiphon.com into a browser and the page doesn't load you can often tell if the problem is with Psiphon or with the proxy, so I ask whether you have configured Psiphon to use a proxy.

I'm not familiar with psiphon, but the problem might be that the servers are behind the NAT. If your router is setup to allow port 80 and 8080 (the servers on psiphon.com), then you might try using another router that doesn't have the same IP address.

@Nemo2393: I've seen a few people use Psiphon.com as a proxy but I never saw any information about it in this thread. Do you know what information they are adding there?

It's interesting because the Psiphon software uses the same proxy settings for all the data channels it provides (like the chat rooms, instant messaging, etc. So if you use a proxy to get Psiphon.com, then you should be able to use the same proxy settings with other channels. But if you're on a university or a business network with a firewall, you might not be able to proxy Psiphon.

I haven't used Psiphon yet, but would like to. I'm hoping to create a channel for my kids' game group where we can communicate (or at least talk about what we're playing).

How do I enable HTTP proxy settings?

I need to configure a Win7 PC so that I can access the internet through a proxy server.

I have enabled the Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings/Use a proxy server for your LAN settings. Now I need to configure the proxy settings. The proxy server needs a username and password. What is the username and password? How do I configure them? It is your own username and password to use the proxy server. If you use a proxy server in Windows, the following steps should be performed: Open the Windows Control Panel. Select Internet Options. Click on Connections tab. Select LAN settings. Select Use a proxy server for your LAN. Type in the username and password and press OK. When you set the proxy for your LAN settings, it is the proxy that you need to set. It can be a proxy with username and password or without username and password (using any anonymous proxy). This is how I did it. Open Internet Options. Go to the "Connections" tab. Click on the "LAN Settings" button. Select "Use a proxy server for your LAN". Enter the proxy server's address in the field. Enter your username and password in the fields below. That's all!
