Now, if you look at history, there are some examples where this was the case: In the past, many big players were counted as full-backs, as long as they were good on both sides. One good example is Paul Breitner in the 1980s and early 90s. Another example was Michael Ballack in the 2000s. With this, these teams made good use of their left-backs to support the central attack, for example with crosses from their right flank.

This approach however led to some drawbacks in the other positions. The right wingers started playing as forwards, or the left wingers became left-back.

Will Germany not play Euro 2024?

It is very likely that UEFA will have another tournament.

The question is whether it is to be played in France or Spain.

How many football players are in Germany?

If you're trying to figure out the numbers, you'll get no easy answer.

How about the number of soccer players? Well, a player on the first team in any of the three major leagues has been in the Bundesliga for the last 12 years.

The German Football League, which runs the second tier, the 3. Liga, had 489 clubs in 2025 and has steadily increased its membership to 622 this season. The professional league, the Bundesliga, has had the same number of clubs since 2025, when there were 612. The third division, the Regionalliga, has expanded from 484 in 2025 to 562 last year.

So there are certainly more than 730 footballers playing in Germany. It's just that the figures for how many of them play in the professional leagues are hard to come by, so we've gone out and counted them.

The Bundesliga is made up of two groups, the eastern (Bundesliga A) and western (Bundesliga B). The 2. Bundesliga, third division, is split into three groups, North, West and South. There is also a fourth division (Verbandsliga) which isn't shown on the league tables and a fifth division (Fussball-Regionalliga) which has been phased out.

The total Bundesliga active player count is 5,000, although 3,000 of those players are ineligible. Those who have played at least five games in the Bundesliga in the last two seasons are automatically eligible for the second tier, the 2.

To qualify, a player must be registered for the 2. Bundesliga, have made at least one appearance in that league, and have played at least five games in the 2. There is a slight difference between how many men and women play in Germany. While the country has a male-to-female ratio of 48.5 to 51.5, the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga have an average of 50.6 men and 49.4 women per 100 players.

We do not know the exact number of professional women players in Germany. But it's safe to say there are many, many more than we can count. One thing is for sure: the top women's Bundesliga players outnumber the men's league 10 to 1.
