What is the easiest streaming stick for seniors?
If you're a senior, this is the one.
It's so easy to set up. No apps to download, and it's really affordable. I've owned a lot of streaming sticks over the years, and this is by far the easiest and most intuitive one. It looks like it was designed by someone who isn't much older than me. But it still feels durable and capable. And if you have a big TV, it's easy to hang in a closet. It's also great for streaming from a phone or tablet.
I do have a couple of issues with it. The first one is that the remote control is tiny. It takes some practice to figure out how to scroll through the menu and make adjustments, but once you get the hang of it, you can easily navigate around the menu using the remote control.
The second issue is that the remote does not always return from sleep mode. It will usually come back on its own, but sometimes I have to tap the power button on the device to get it to come back. That's a minor annoyance, though.
I really like this streaming stick. If you're looking for an easy streaming stick that won't cost you a fortune, this is the one for you.
Ease of Use: Very Easy. Value: Fair. Bottom Line: If you want an easy streaming stick, this is the one. How we test. The Triton Elite is our easy streaming stick for seniors. It has all the best parts of a streaming stick a USB port, HDMI port, and antenna tuner but it's a little more affordable than most streaming sticks.
We tested the Triton Elite with two Roku players, three HDTVs, and a laptop. We used the Roku Remote app to control the Triton Elite.
What streaming devices work with older TVs?
I'm on my third streaming device, and my TV is an older CRT TV.
I have the Amazon Fire TV Stick, the Roku Streaming Stick, and the Apple TV. I've been told I can't use the Apple TV because it doesn't work with older TVs. How do you get around this?
The Apple TV doesn't work with an older TV. That's just a fact of life. If your TV has HDMI 1.4 input, it will work. This is supported by both Apple and Roku. So long as the input supports the appropriate resolution and bit depth, the TV should support the required features.
As a practical matter, I can tell you that there are many CRT TVs out there that can handle all 4K, HDR, and all of the rest without issue. Apple TV is the only one that has to say "I don't know if I can do this." The others have no such limitation.
It's worth noting that 4K HDR requires a 4K display, but there are other HDTVs that can handle it.
Is Roku good for seniors?
I'm a senior on the rise.
My parents are both in their late 60's and we watch movies together at their house in the evenings and on weekends. They have Roku (and we have satellite) and it seems that they can only get to play something, then have to re-input a password or re-enter a code to continue. My parents haven't been able to do that in about a year. I tried the Roku and had no problems. The TV has a very good picture, it's easy to use, and it's much cheaper than cable. But the problem my parents have is that they can't figure out how to use it and so they often miss shows when they are watching movies. Is there any way to make the Roku easier to use for older folks?
Re: Roku good for seniors? Yes it is. I'm a senior, too. The best thing about Roku is that you don't have to buy an expensive cable package with tons of channels you don't want. And the best thing about the Roku is that you can pay for just the shows you want. Not like you have to pay for each channel. They have Roku (and we have satellite) and it seems that they can only get to play something, then have to re-input a password or re-enter a code to continue.
It's not meant for them. It's not a game console and it is not an HDTV, so it's not going to be as nice of a viewing experience as it would be if you had a Roku device installed into an HDTV or a game console.
Does any streaming service offer a senior discount?
I've never had one.
What's the best way to learn more about streaming media? Get your hands on as many streaming devices as you can. That's right, we were already asking for it; Amazon and Roku both have their latest devices on display at CES. Plus, Sony continues to make new announcements.
How do I tell when new hardware is released? It varies; some new media boxes get new models announced at CES. And if they're not getting released at CES, just wait until the next year and you'll likely be able to buy them a few months later. We're also getting some new streaming options such as PlayStation Vue and Hulu Live.
Are any new streaming providers launching at CES? Well, there was no HBO Go or Hulu Plus in attendance, but new players such as PlayStation Vue, Hulu Live, and fuboTV are debuting at CES. When does Netflix start to stream live TV to computers via their own dedicated app? This may be coming sooner rather than later. If you read between the lines of Netflix's CES event last week, that seems to be the next logical step. But if you really want to go out on a limb and bet on a specific date, you can say that it will happen sometime in 2026.
How many times is Netflix going to stream the Oscars at once? This may actually be a recurring thing, but that isn't officially confirmed yet. Does any streaming provider offer offline viewing on PC? You won't find it anywhere unless it's offered in conjunction with the hardware vendor. If you want a solution that works across all of your streaming devices (Chromecast, Roku, Xbox, etc.), Plex has you covered.
The best part of CES 2017? The CES is where all the players get together in one place and compare notes. The show floor is full of all the new hardware. But it's the people inside that really make the event great. The friendships you build with your peers can last for years.
Which is why we're so excited about these exclusive interviews with two of our partners from CES 2026. The only thing better than meeting people at a show is talking to them long after the event is over. Enjoy the ride!
