What does scraping mean in tech?

In my last post I wrote about my question about where the Web fits in the modern enterprise (and what it meant to me). I finally got to thinking: to be honest, I didn't find a good answer I didn't find answer that was helpful when thinking about the roles of technology in the enterprise. I had a chat with a good friend, a senior analyst, who has been in enterprise for a while, and she said she was struggling to find a good answer. I found myself in a similar position, and we got to thinking about the meaning of scraping. The first thing we realized was that scraping has become a big deal. We're seeing tools that are scraping very large amounts of data. We're seeing companies that are scraping data to sell it back to others. We're seeing companies that are scraping data for analytics to make predictions.

We started thinking about the different types of data scraping that people are doing, and we realized that many of these were simply scraping the data out of other systems to get it into another system. It seemed like were scraping data and creating new data. We started thinking that this really was just the basic use of the term, and we realized that we hadn't thought about this term in our discussions or writing.

When we started thinking about this term, we realized that we'd have to define what we meant by scraping. So we decided to take a look at the O'Reilly Radar, which is one of the top blogs about technology in the enterprise. We looked at the top articles from the last year, and we found this blog post by Mike Swaim.

When we read through the post, we found that Mike was defining scraping as extracting data from websites and other services either in bulk or in a targeted manner. We realized that this is pretty much exactly what we had been thinking, and were thinking about scraping as a synonym for extracting data. So we decided to change our definition.

What is scraping with examples?

If you've ever spent time on a DIY project and find yourself asking yourself: What did he do? How did he do it? Where does he get those gears? - you've probably been bitten by the Scraping with Examples bug. The Scraping with Examples bug bit you when you found yourself spending far too much time looking up information about the mechanical parts of a workshop project and far too little time actually building the project! Many beginners have the same experience and ask themselves why the gears seemed to be so complicated. The reason the gears seem so complicated is because, as a beginner, you simply don't have enough experience. You're learning the mechanics, even though you're not actually building the gears, you're reading up on how the gears work.

Scraping with Examples is the practice of prototyping a mechanical project. (I used the term prototyping here, but the essence of this concept can be found in the term reverse engineering. The term reverse engineering is often used when a new product is being built, and a prototype is made to see if the product will work as intended. A prototype can be made by using a 3D printer, but it can also be done with a series of test gears.)

This is how it started: I was building an espresso machine and was checking out the gearbox from a mini lathe I have. I noticed it had a lot of teeth and I couldn't figure out how it worked.

Of course, I tried reading up on it. I read about the gear train system, explained how the gear train worked, and even watched some videos. I read about things I didn't understand and learned how the mechanical parts of the lathe actually worked. I also learned more about face gear transmission. I learned about the importance of face gear transmission and became fascinated by the mechanics of face gear transmission. I discovered how important each gear was, and how each gear had a different function.

I learned that the mini lathe needed to be rebuilt with gold plated gears and then tested. I learned that a face gear transmission requires the use of a worm gear, 1/4 drive and 1/4 and 3/8 drive.
