What is the best movie for Family Night?
That's what we've been asking ourselves since our family movie night tradition started about five years ago.
We have watched a lot of movies together since then, so we have a good idea of what kinds of movies are favorites for us. We have also seen that our kids prefer movies that feature a lot of action and humor.
We asked our family to vote on their favorite family movie based on their favorite movie features. It may be surprising to find out which movie wins the prize for best family movie, but when we look at the top four, the winner is a movie we would never have guessed! What are the current top 10 Netflix movies?

? I don't follow the US streaming service religiously, because I have yet to come across a really good show. My choices for what's good from Netflix are below: Love. How it all starts. The Break-Up. Big Fat Liar. A Series of Unfortunate Events. The Good Wife. We're the Millers. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Chef. The Watchmen. Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960). One of the greatest motion pictures ever made. It remains a must-see despite having been 25 years since it's original release. In addition to being one of the best, though, it's also the creepiest.
Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988). It wasn't a commercial hit in the US but here in the UK it's considered cult classics. It features one of my favourite non-English language films that I've yet to see: Spanish/Italian production La Ciociara, about aliens visiting Earth who find our planet has just evolved out of existence.
The Fly (1986). One of two movies, along with Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, to depict an early attempt by Stephen King to bring classic horror themes to the big screen. This was actually the last film starring Jeff Goldblum and did not do as well as Don't Be Afraid.
The Sixth Sense (1999). Another good Stephen King movie. I remember watching this one when it first came out and now looking back thinking how cleverly written and thought out it was, plus how little dialogue it actually had.
Crocodile Dundee III (1988). In an era of sequels and reboots I haven't actually seen any of the first two Crocudle movies, and only watched the new Crocodile Dundee III this year. I think some really good family time would be had by watching a few episodes of the TV series, which like the movie is set in Australia and follows the adventures of a Croc hunter trying to stop various people - including, eventually, the Prime Minister - from ruining the local tourism industry.
The Fly II (1989).
What good family movies are out on Netflix?
As a family we watch Netflix in our downtime at the end of the day to unwind after a hard day's work.
Sometimes we all want a different movie and sometimes we all want to cuddle up on the couch together and just relax. Sometimes it gets to be too much, like a four hour marathon binge session.
So, how do we make sure that we don't go too far overboard? The best family movies on Netflix that all three of us can appreciate together are listed below. I haven't included any children's movies here; it would be almost unfair to include some of them since many of the family movies come from Disney and Pixar.
1) The Lion King (1994). 2) The Princess and the Frog (2009). 3) Big Hero 6 (2014). If you're not familiar with the animated masterpiece The Lion King then let me direct you to my previous articles here and here where I have listed down the best episodes of the movie and the video games that are set in its world. It has a ton of content which is why it takes over three separate articles to list down all the references I know.
But even without knowing what all the references are, there is a lot of good jokes and interesting scenes in this movie. And as for the second, you can take your kids and they will all have a great time watching it. It's just a fun movie to see when you're together as a family.
The Princess and the Frog is a musical fantasy-adventure film directed by Jon Favreau from a story by Craig McCracken, Stephen J. Anderson, and Michael Colak in which it follows a lonely young girl named Tiana who gets caught up in a feud between the voodoo magic and the evil Prince Naveen. The film was released in March of 2026 to critical acclaim and box office success. This movie is a true delight for young children who love the music but also enjoy the visuals and the adventure. It will have them singing and dancing the whole way.
Big Hero 6 is an American superhero film that was released in 2026. The script was written by Simon Kinsberg and Jeff Hall, with a story by Dan Fogelman.
