How much does a manual tester earn in NYC?

I was told that the salary of a manual tester should between 18-20K in NYC, can anyone please confirm or refute this? When I looked into this last year I was under the impression that a manual tester has only 3 years experience and therefore is expected to earn more money in comparison to a "programmer" whose career progression could be as long as 25 years and who earns on average a little over 14k/year. As you can see from the list of available positions for programmers here, most positions require at least 8 years of experience as a programmer. It seems like it would make sense to me to have a tester making significantly more money than a programmer as their job seems to be much less complex in terms of time and expertise. However, I may be mistaken on this matter so I'm keen to hear what people with experience in this field think.

Are people in this field on a fixed salary? Where do the hours come in? Or are they contractors or employed (per project or ongoing basis)? You get 2 days a week free at our company so I think that's about it. That's not too shabby for someone who spent years just trying to get a feel for HTML/XHTML/CSS (never did get quite proficient) before discovering PHP! In a contract role, you usually get paid per project or per hour. In a full-time role, you're almost certainly paid per hour, though there can be other benefits such as vacation time or sick leave.

I'd suggest looking for a contract job where the amount of time needed is unknown, and where you can bid on how long you'll need to work (there are all sorts of possibilities for this). If you can do an hour's worth of work in, say, two days, then even if it turns out to be three, you're still only working half the time; if your project needs something more than four hours, then you win because you're not paying any overtime, whereas if you needed the full eight hours and you worked half that time, you'd pay extra.
