It can be a lot to digest but, first and foremost, content curation is the simple act of creating new content by combining the knowledge of a small number of sources.

To understand what it is we have to first understand what it isn't. When people say 'content curation' they are often thinking of the idea of gathering content from different sources and presenting it together in a manner that is digestible to readers. However, this isn't the only way you can create content. The term is used much less commonly for more personal efforts to create content, or as part of academic research. I like to think of it in these terms; It's the act of collecting content that you already know, from the internet or elsewhere, so you can then share that with other people who don't have the time to find or even to do the leg work of collecting that same information themselves.

If you wanted to create a series on the importance of recycling or the history of recycling you could, for example, find books on the subject, get advice from staff on your school's library or ask someone you know who already knows the answers. You might, however, find that you have no need to find further information as you have existing ideas in your head. If you were creating a series on the role of women in the workplace, you might take a look at the relevant resources on Wikipedia but if you have an idea for what you would write, then great. You can skip Wikipedia.

If you wanted to create a series about the history of the human body why would you need to look elsewhere? Unless your next book was going to be a biography of Leonardo da Vinci, you probably just have ideas in your head and need to express them to a new audience. So, instead of going to a library and trawling through every textbook you can find on anatomy, you find the best articles on the internet and add your ideas to them. When you are done sharing your series of thoughtfully curated articles you can go back to your book on Leonardo da Vinci.

How can content curation help in education? I'll answer that question, but you might want to check your notes first, it's not always that straightforward. When we want to learn, sometimes we need something to help us along.

Curator works with different kinds of material, including objects, drawings, images, films, and written documents. The curator's primary responsibility is deciding what to exhibit; he or she may assist with the production, research, and acquisition of the objects displayed in the exhibition or gallery. The curator may assist in planning a gallery, a research collection, or a lecture series. This position also works closely with staff in other departments such as development, public affairs, education, archival services, conservation and preservation, and finance.

C1 - Creation: Curating is a skill of collecting and synthesizing material, and communicating your ideas. C2 - Criticism: You must choose which materials are interesting and worthy of being on display at the museum. You choose the items, events, and installations to create an atmosphere that resonates with the context of the space and the time period.

C3 - Continuity: You must remain loyal to your personal vision of the collection/exhibition/project during its life cycle, since you have a part in it for the duration of its existence. C4 - Communication: You must communicate and share this work of art with the appropriate audiences, both the local, national, and global. You communicate through press, social media, websites, catalogues, newspapers, and public spaces.

C5 - Curation / Control: You oversee the use of material, ensure that they are used appropriately, ensure that the collection survives, and protect them from damage by making sure all necessary repairs are performed. For better or worse, it appears the way in which news sites report current events is becoming more and more influenced by new technology. What used to be a method for journalists to keep abreast of what happened just as their counterparts in other countries were doing, are now just clickable links. The only time people actually come across information that they didn't see at the first moment it was published, is when they choose to open up articles themselves. The problem here is that many of those that are currently reporting on current events are being affected by the same way - a lack of choice.

To combat this, a group of technology minded friends began discussing how we could help ourselves when looking for something to read. We thought about what our ideal article format would be, and ultimately decided that instead of reading hundreds of pages of text, the key for us would be to find as much information as we could with the minimum of effort, then just condense it down so that we could go through it in an orderly way.

This is where we came up with the idea of a content curation tool. The Problem. The problem here lies in a few different places. First, the sheer volume of information makes it increasingly difficult to get the best out of content with such huge numbers of different articles on it. Secondly, this has led to a shift from print media such as newspapers and magazines to online publications. These tend to give their own brand of curation, leaving users no option other than to either follow the brand or do it yourself.

The Solution. So, having found a need, we wanted to find a way of addressing that by giving our friends and followers a tool they could use for themselves. While we did consider creating this ourselves, due to the nature of this particular problem, we decided that we knew a small team of experts best suited to do it instead. We wanted to address two of the problems faced by anyone wanting to do it themselves.

Content Curation. Firstly, curation can be defined as the management or compilation of pieces of information for a specific purpose. As a result, a curation tool would need to give you some control over how that information was compiled, presented, ordered and filtered. It is also an important part of the whole.
