What does the U.S. Defense Department do?

S. Defense Department has an official job description: To provide our country with a ready, trained, and equipped combat force that is capable of deterring aggression and accomplishing our security objectives.

That sounds like a pretty simple, straightforward, and sensible goal for any nation's defense establishment. And the U. Defense Department seems to have an effective answer for accomplishing that goal.

In my judgment, however, the United States seems to have an effective defense establishment only on paper, and not in reality. The Pentagon has spent trillions of dollars in the past three decades to build what is called a global force structure. This is a large number of assets - such as aircraft carriers, bombers, submarines, tanks, artillery pieces, and missiles - designed to operate in every part of the world. The Pentagon has deployed these assets to distant places like Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Libya, and Yemen.

Many of these forces are stationed in countries where the U. Has no diplomatic relations. In other words, these forces are deployed far from the United States. Some of these forces are positioned in the Middle East, where the U. Is fighting a war against Islamic terrorists.

These global forces have a great deal of power. They can be used to attack any country in the world at any time. Of course, such an attack would be an act of war, and could lead to all kinds of military conflicts around the world.

The global force structure is, of course, built for use in a big war, like World War III. It is not built to be used for smaller conflicts, like some of the wars that the U. Is fighting in the Middle East.

The Pentagon has also built the largest military base in the world, named Camp Arifjan, in the Middle East. Camp Arifjan is located in Kuwait, across the Gulf of Oman from Iran. It is one of many military bases being built by the United States in the Middle East. Has built its global force structure, and has also built its largest base, in the Middle East. So, this is not a coincidence. The Pentagon has built its global force structure for the Middle East.

There are other indications that the Pentagon has built its global force structure for the Middle East.

What branches are under the DoD?

S. Department of Defense (DOD) encompasses an extremely broad collection of agencies, subdivisions, and headquarters all under a single umbrella. According to DLA, the current head of the DoD is Acting Secretary Patrick Shanahan. The primary executive branch agency responsible for DOD oversight is the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD). The OSD reports directly to the U. President as the principal advisor on matters concerning DOD. The Office of the Under Secretary of Defense, in charge of all defense research and development programs, the military services, and acquisition, works to implement President Trump's budget request for a defense buildup through the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

There are four operational combatant commands (COCOM) and one joint operational command (JOC) under the U. DOD headquarters houses the Unified Combatant Commands. The military departments include the Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, and Army. There are four service-specific commands (SSC) under each service: Air Force SSC, Army SSC, Navy SSC, and Marine Corps SSC. The DOD also includes one component command, U. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), which is an independent command not subject to the U.

Other branches of the United States Armed Forces. The U. Secret Service is an independent executive branch agency under the direct control of the president of the United States with the responsibility to protect the president, vice president and the immediate family of the president. The CIA is also part of the Department of Defense and responsible for collecting, analyzing and disseminating intelligence, but it does not have any operational powers nor is authorized to use force. The National Security Agency (NSA), the largest and most important spy agency of the United States, maintains a large number of listening posts throughout the world and in various countries, collecting electronic communications sent via satellites or wireless devices; other U. Intelligence agencies include the Military Intelligence Agency, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and the Central Intelligence Agency. Intelligence services also employ the FBI, the DEA, and the Diplomatic Security Service.

Why am I getting a letter from the Department of Defense?

I had always assumed that government entities in the US never sent such letters.

It is not as if I have a security clearance and my emails are on file.

Let's see . I had assumed that the DoD was a bit like the IRS - ie, an extension of their power in terms of "collecting" data about you, that they would also be able to use any means necessary to gather this data from anyone on your list of contacts. I had assumed that all of these "assumed rights" applied to the DoD as well. Turns out that the rules are different for the DoD. It's an interesting read, so you may want to stop here. Just a note: This is NOT a "privacy" issue but rather a rights issue.

There's not much here for the non-initiated, but the DoD has an interesting section on the 4th Amendment: The Department of Defense collects personal information about United States citizens, lawful permanent residents and their family members living in the United States for various reasons: To assess individual eligibility for Department programs, benefits and services. However, many DoD agencies require individuals to participate in the Federal Register's automated registration system on matters related to military pay and allowances, benefits, compensation and other entitlements. As such, individuals may need to disclose personal information in order to access military benefits, services or activities.

If you think of it, it makes sense that the DoD would need a system to track your location, health, etc. it's a very important part of our military effort, after all, and we can't have some "terrorist" killing the Commander-in-Chief and taking over the country when he's visiting the dentist.

So if they need to figure out who has to go where so they can kill the President, they certainly need a good way of doing it, whether that means tracking cellphones or GPS units. The part you are interested in is. Now there's always a catch.

The United States Navy consists of nine major geographic regions of the United States. These regions include the Atlantic Fleet, Arctic Command, Europe Command, Eastern Fleet, Gulf Fleet, Pacific Fleet, West Coast Fleet, Fleet Activities Guam, Fleet Activities, Midway Atoll. In addition to the major geographic regions, United States Navy includes the naval services, submarine service, surface fleet, supply fleet, and amphibious force. On average, there are roughly 1,000 ships and boats of US Navy. Since World War II, the US Navy has played a major role in the history of the United States. It also contributed to the American victory over Japan during World War II.
