What is the difference between ProxyChains and VPN?
There are two types of VPN: ProxyChains and OpenVPN.
VPNs have become popular over the last year because they allow one to be logged on in all areas with a different IP (with or without changing DNS settings). VPNs use either IPSec or OpenVPN. The security measures can be quite similar, though they have some differences. In this section, we will discuss these differences so you can know what you are getting yourself into. Let's start with VPNs!
What is a VPN? In brief, VPN is nothing but a virtual wire that connects two locations. By using a VPN, a person can be seated in a different location or on a network that may belong to someone else. In terms of privacy, it is like having your own dedicated IP address. This means that a website running on this location will have its own dedicated IP. The location does not change. Since each website has a specific IP address, hackers and spammers cannot use their own servers to send out spam, as they don't know which IP to use.
Why Use a VPN? Security: When using the VPN, your information is kept safe from spying eyes. Network Performance: We do not want to download everything over our connection every time; hence, we would use a VPN. Privacy: When you log on in an unknown place, people should not be able to see what you are accessing online. There are VPNs that will let you access your home connection while being in another location. You can easily configure this VPN by going to your router's setup page. In this case, it is a smart move to use OpenVPN, which can use port forwarding.
What are ProxyChains? ProxyChains are applications made specifically to help you change your IP address. A user has to change his or her DNS server IP settings to a local DNS server such as OpenDNS, a free DNS server.
When connecting through a proxy, it usually goes on the route that is not supposed to be known for security reasons. ProxyChains can protect you from that. ProxyChains have been in use since early 2026. They have become very popular because you can quickly change your IP with just a few clicks. ProxyChains have a built-in security system.
Why use ProxyChains?
ProxyChains is an extension for Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome that enables you to create ProxyChains in the browser (Firefox and Google Chrome), thus enabling you to have more than one network connection at a time. How does it work? Once you install and run ProxyChains, you will be asked whether you want to create a new ProxyChain. Simply click on the Yes button to proceed. This will open up a new window (in Firefox, a tab).
In the next window, you will be asked to select the name of the ProxyChain that you want to create. After you enter the name of the ProxyChain, you will be asked to select the ProxyChain's Proxy Type (HTTP or SOCKS). Finally, you will be asked whether you want to continue. You can simply close this window if you do not want to proceed.
Alternatively, you can also create multiple ProxyChains, even if you have not yet selected the name of any ProxyChain. Selecting the Proxy Type. When creating a ProxyChain in the browser, there are two types of Proxy Chains that you can choose from: HTTP Proxy Chains and SOCKS Proxy Chains. HTTP Proxy Chains allow you to connect to the internet through any web proxy server, ie, they help you to tunnel traffic through the web proxy server to your internet connection. The process is simple: First, download and install the ProxyChains extension. This is easy. You can simply click on the Download button.
Then, right-click on any web page in your browser, and select the Copy as HTML option. The page will automatically open in a new tab.
Now, go back to the ProxyChains page and select the HTTP Proxy Chain option. In the next window, you will be asked to enter the address of the ProxyChain that you want to create (the URL of the ProxyChain). In case the URL of the ProxyChain is not specified, you can still create the ProxyChain by simply clicking on the Add button. After you click on the Add button, the next window will appear. You can either enter the URL of the ProxyChain in the URL field or the URL of the ProxyChain in the Name field.
What is the difference between Tor and ProxyChains?
When we use Tor or ProxyChains, we are using two different ways to accomplish the same task.
Both are using the Tor network to anonymize and obfuscate traffic, but with different methods. With ProxyChains, Tor is used to hide the originating IP address of the request. In other words, when a packet goes through Tor it will make it look like its from a different IP address. When the destination IP address of a packet comes back, Tor will do something to it so it will make it look like its from an IP address in the same country as the destination IP address. With ProxyChains, you can control where the request is coming from.
What is Tor? Tor is a free software network that lets you browse the web privately and anonymously. How does Tor work? When a person uses the Tor network, it starts by setting up a new connection to a random set of servers on the Tor network. The Tor network then sets up your traffic with these servers, in which it encrypts and obfuscates the traffic. The encryption obfuscates the IP address of the client sending the request and makes it appear that they are coming from an IP address in a different location. This obfuscation happens on the exit node, in other words, the final destination IP address of a packet. The exit node takes the packet, decrypts it, and then routes it to its destination. Once this last bit happens, everything will be clear.
The key part of all of this is that there is nothing stopping a government or company from tracking the packets in transit on the Tor network. When the exit node is set up, it can intercept and analyze packets. The only way to completely hide your activity is to run your own exit nodes.
So the exit node can monitor your traffic in transit, but they can't see where the traffic is coming from? Once the exit node has analyzed the packets, it can see where they are coming from. It can see that you are connected to a server called www.example. However, it doesn't know where that server is. To prevent this from happening, we need to use onion routing. Onion routing is the same concept, except instead of using one exit node, it uses many exit nodes. All of these exit nodes start with the IP address of the server that we are trying to reach, www.
What are ProxyChains in Kali Linux?
Proxies are basically a network of servers that can be used to access resources on the internet.
By logging into a proxy you are in fact logging into a different server. This usually means that you will be able to view different websites or access blocked websites that wouldn't otherwise be possible. Most often you will be logged into a proxy with internet access via Tor and by doing this you will be able to bypass many blockages.
Proxy Chains are just a collection of proxies. You can create your own, or you can choose to download a pre-made one.
Pre-made Proxy Chains exist for many purposes and are all available in Kali.e. They are a way to get around DNS Lookups which is typically very slow and unreliable and so the chain itself doesn't really need to be any more reliable than DNS. Proxy Chains are useful because they allow you to hide your IP address from people that search for it online, and it allows you to use an IP Address that is actually a part of the Proxy Chain. The following sections will cover the different types of proxy chains that are available in Kali Linux. Local Proxies are just a collection of proxies. They are easy to setup, but can only access your computer. They require an outside internet connection. They typically range between 1 and 10 locations. These are often used for basic tasks, such as accessing Netflix on the go.
