Can VPN activity be monitored?
It's a fair question, and it turns out the answer is yes.
While using a VPN service is certainly going to hide your activity from the people you're trying to fool, once you exit the tunnel you're still being tracked. You see, your activities are not encrypted until they reach their final destination, which in this case is the internet gateway where the traffic passes through the public internet. The VPN provider can and will monitor all this traffic passing through it, and it is at this point that they have complete visibility of your activity.
Whether or not this is a problem is a question we won't get into right now. Instead, we'll focus on how to monitor it.
How to Track VPN Logs. This is where things get a little tricky. The VPN provider is still going to have your IP address, and with that you can potentially be traced back to your real location. However, if you don't do anything to reveal yourself and you remain idle, you're not going to be seen, unless you happen to be carrying out something illegal.
So, while there are a number of tools out there designed to enable you to detect when somebody is monitoring your IP address, there's also a way for the provider to see if you're actually using the service. In some cases they will monitor this by checking the level of bandwidth usage, while others will have a dedicated customer support team that will follow your activity.
To avoid detection, you'll need to make sure that you're not using any of the VPN service's features that may lead to identifying you. For example, even though it's usually possible to browse anonymously via a VPN, it isn't always. That's why the majority of VPN providers include a kill switch, which stops all traffic when the VPN connection fails. In order to detect this, the provider's network operators will monitor and report on any incidents, which will help them to identify when this occurred and when you were online.
Another example is DNS leak protection. If you set the browser to use a third-party DNS service, then you may be tracked if the VPN provider tracks your DNS request activity.
