What is the use of visual timer in the classroom?
The aim of the study was to determine if visual timers have an added educational value when used as part of a teacher's lesson plan.
A sample of 11 teachers was asked to teach a lesson on the use of visual timers. The lesson plan included the use of the visual timer with the students, to promote greater involvement in a problem-based learning unit, based on the idea that greater involvement should result in greater learning (Bakker & Castelden, 1994). The data were analysed using a multivariate analysis of variance. The results show that for the teachers who used the visual timer and those who did not, there was no significant difference between the number of tasks students mastered (P=0.14). However, there was a significant difference between the teachers' teaching approaches (P=0.01) and their beliefs about what was most important to develop in the students (P=0.01) An understanding of the need to support task mastery is a prerequisite to achieving academic success, and the use of a visual timer will assist the teacher to achieve this understanding.
