Where do you get selenium for chickens?

I am a little confused about how selenium should be for my chickens.

Do you give it in their feed, pour it on their water, or what?

I found selenium pellets and gave them to a few of our hens. We will be increasing to 2,000 IU per day. The hens get it from the selenium pellets, but there isn't any other way to get it for them?

If your chicks start the year being fed a vitamin premix containing selenium, you may need top off the dietary amount for the next several weeks during which they grow, and during those months as you move up through the ages of the chicks' development. What is a good source of selenium for chickens?

I started giving chickens a high quality selenium (selenium sulfate) supplement, but the color is different in their eggs and there is not an increase in their weight. Does this mean it is not doing anything for them? Answer: It depends on the concentration and your feeding plan. Selenium can be used to increase the level of antioxidants in the body, and is an integral part of glutathione peroxidase. In low doses it stimulates production of glutathione. It can also promote growth in poultry.

If your birds are not improving when given a higher level of selenium, it may better to switch to another selenium source. Ask a question. Expertise. I have had trouble with my new feed storage bin falling over before. It is now in a closet. Do you have any tips on how I might keep it safe?
You should definitely store your feed in a metal bin, such as stainless steel or galvanized metal. This will help keep the feed from getting rust which could cause your hens to get sick from poisoning by the toxin.

Another method to keep the feed from rusting is using a food grade mineral oil such as Mobil 1 or Mobil Super. This will keep it from absorbing moisture.

You should always make sure to inspect the bin to make sure it is secure before the start of your feeding. My roosters won't raise their voice when I try to crow him. How do I encourage him to crow? They're not "growling" at you. Their voices may be weak or quiet, and they could have problems because of this. If they are quiet, give them an egg. They'll usually raise their voices when they hear the first cracking sound.

If they are still weak, give them lots of food. You don't need to feed them anything special other than regular food. You can increase their appetite by adding some of your home-cooked food to their ration.

How do you treat wry neck chickens with selenium?

I have a 3-year old that has been treated since wk.

2, with some form of selenium. All of his wattle are covered with scabs in 2-3 places. It is also obvious that he has some sort of a skin condition in that area. Is it safe to stop treatment (and also start supplementing him with B complex)? What type of supplements should I feed him and how do I feed them?

Thanks for any help you can give. Honeybee. March 16th, 2026, 12:26 PM. Hi Honeybee. Good news on your three-year old's selenium status - he's been getting enough in the feed! However, with some conditions such as wry neck & skin (warts), there could be a problem with too much zinc or not enough manganese in his diet. Both of these are essential nutrients, so I'd recommend some feeding tests to find out more. I do believe you can go as low as 40ppm on zinc. You may want to use a lower temperature with this and run your chick under a hood instead of in your kitchen.

As for supplementing his B complex, his gut should be doing all the work for him - and even if he wasn't you could get away with only a B-P complex without worrying about additional micronutrients. I'd like to suggest you check out "The Backyard Chicken Coop Bible" by Bob O'Dell for loads of good info & ideas. He has a chapter devoted to this very subject, and it's filled with helpful suggestions and illustrations. It's a big book, so don't try to read it in a day! Good luck!

Tinker. March 16th, 2026, 12:36 PM. I've worked around a lot of this stuff, including wry neck/scaly skin, because of chickens I raised at a large hatchery where no preventive measures were taken. My theory is that it started out from an extreme of stress with many things going wrong, such as bad egg shells, too many chickens to handle, not enough room, etc, so the end result was just wry neck disease. I did a few basic "cures" but it was pretty awful.
