What are the benefits of vitamin E and selenium for poultry?

How do you give vitamin E and selenium to chickens?

I've been thinking about giving vitamin E and selenium to chickens because their feet are really, really dry.

They have long featherbeds on them as well. I'm trying to make that decision, but all of the different ways I can find online say to feed vitamins as a whole; I'd like to know how these two specific vitamins (Vitamin E and Selenium) would be given in each of the different ways. The Vitamin E would be supplemented with the organic corn oil and the selenium mixed into the chicken's food before the oil.

I would also take those products home directly from the poultryman. You could buy the mineral premixes at your local feedstore. These could be mixed with the feed before you put it into the storage bin. The only thing that you need to worry about is cross contamination by combining products. There are a few problems you run into with mixing different animal feed components. For example, if you use too much zinc and iron. In that case they will precipitate out from solution and will end up as white flaky granules. So a lot of thought needs to go into it. If you want more information contact your local feeder's association or someone here on AMS forum.

Thanks for the input! I will definitely be looking into the feedstore to see what type of information they have. I was planning on going this route because it costs a bit more than I currently do, but I did also read a while back where it was recommended to mix the vitamins in. One is from a guy that's a livestock vet who actually wrote a book on animals and nutrition called the Holistic Poultry Book, where he states that people have had success taking vitamins orally that way when mixed with the feed.

In regards to feeding with the oil, can I just mix the minerals in with the corn oil and then add it in at the end? Hi Bill- I would recommend getting these products from the feed store rather than mixing any of them in when feeding. Feeding supplements is a job you dont want to do to yourself. You will almost always loose money over time with adding supplements into grain based mixes rather than a true vitamin premix.

I am a large, medium, small, turkey seller with 50 laying hens, 3 laying ducks, 15 turkey poults, and 1 rooster so I think I have pretty good insight on these topics.

Can chickens take human vitamin E?

This is a discussion on ?

Within the Cat & Kitten forums, part of the Animal Rescue category; I don't know if this has been asked before, but I wanted to know if you guys know if chickens can take vitamin E. I know they can take iron, but I'm not sure about vitamin E. I don't know if chickens have any natural ways of getting vitamin E or if they have to get it in their diet, like dogs do.

If they can't get it naturally, I want to know if you guys think they would better off on a chicken diet (like they eat) than on a beef diet. I know it's expensive to feed a chicken but I guess it's worth it.

If they can't get it naturally, I want to know if you guys think they would better off on a chicken diet (like they eat) than on a beef diet. I didn't even know chickens could get vitamin E in their diet. That's interesting. I thought it was a supplement only for humans.

How do you treat vitamin E deficiency in chickens?

By Michael Hall.

I have a broiler that has been very sick for 3 weeks now. It has been vomiting, has diarrhea and sometimes will drink water when no other food is available. I have started the treatment of vitamin E but it has only been for 2 days. She has not gained any weight in the last week. The vet said to wait until she is stable before giving the E. I do not want to give her anymore if it is not working. She is on a special diet. What do you think?

Hello. In the general case, it is not recommended to treat a chicken with vitamin E supplementation until the first signs of improvement are observed. In your case, the condition of your bird suggests that it is likely suffering from coccidiosis. This is a very common condition in broilers and the symptoms you describe would be expected.

The symptoms of coccidiosis are often confused with those of vitamin E deficiency. While the former does involve some gastrointestinal symptoms, the latter usually involves neurological symptoms, such as poor coordination, tremors and incoordination. Vitamin E deficiency is a condition in which there is an absence of vitamin E in the tissues. Vitamin E supplementation should be initiated once improvement has been observed.
