Is a free version of FortiClient VPN available?
Answer: FortiClient VPN has an active free service on Microsoft Windows, Macintosh, and Linux operating systems.
Free users can connect to networks at no charge. However, users of the free service must connect through a Microsoft firewall to a paid FortiClient VPN user and must have an active subscription with a limited-access account. The free version of the application is free, but access to FortiClient's advanced features is restricted.

I see your point, I use windows 7 too. But, my point is i've got a few servers with windows 7 on and if I start it, it'll make me loose my connection to the server (at least for around 20-30 seconds), then i'll still be able to do everything.
I can't find out any option in the client itself, that would allow me to enable/disable the remote access, or maybe there is an alternative way of implementing such configuration on the server side
Hi there. I don't think that this option will work because the windows OS does not actually "start" the VPN when the connection is made. It merely "opens a connection" to the VPN tunnel, which happens before you logon. When you then go to access a remote PC, Windows 7 is not actually logging into the remote PC, it is just talking to the VPN software. So you're correct in your assertion, Windows 7 is not actively running a VPN for the remote PC. The windows OS can only talk to the VPN software. That is why you can disconnect it and immediately reconnect and regain your connections, as Windows 7 is still talking to the VPN software. In order to disable the VPN on the Windows 7 host, the option is to turn off the network adapter in the control panel, but if it is working you will still have a secure connection.
This is a known bug and the only solution is to use some kind of alternative tunneling software like Avast Guard VPN.
