Here's some info I found after a couple of hours of online search in Wikipedia and some other sites. It can be quite different from what you hear in sports news that all German footballers are heroes, but there are many exceptions and lots of players are just or only something.

Anyway, here's some interesting facts about the players who play for Germany: The first German coach. Johann Heinrich Mller (1788-1863) was one of the most famous soccer coaches before his death. He worked in Dsseldorf from 1821 to 1830 where he organized a local soccer match with 11 players from Dsseldorf against a larger team consisting of up to 70 players from a neighboring town. Johann Heinrich played for both teams. He had been a player in the Royal Guard before he started working as a coach. This was the first recorded football game outside England.

Later Mller's name was linked to the formation of the first German football association and the creation of the first German football league, in the 1860s. The first German national football team was organized in 1888 by the Stadt- und Vorortbund for amateur players. In the beginning it consisted of only players from Berlin. On June 4th, 1899, the first international match was played at Spielfeld Stadion between the home team Berliner FC Germania and an English Football Club, Wanderers. The Wanderers won 5-1. On July 14th, 1899, the first German league match was played at Ernst Mayr stadium Berlin, where 1,500 people came to watch the Berliner FC Germania defeated 6-1 the Berliner Fuball-Club von 1900.

But the most interesting fact about the first German national team is that it was disbanded due to political reasons. It was prohibited by Kaiser Wilhelm II because he disliked soccer and it was too closely associated with political movements.
