How do you wipe a locked iPhone without the password?
Apple's answer to that question is easy: With a piece of paper.
That's the answer in at least one case in the United States, as reported by Wired's Threat Level blog.
The issue arose after a thief stole an iPhone from the victim's car, according to Threat Level. The car was parked near a subway station. Police, who had been tipped off by a store owner, followed the thief onto the subway platform and saw him on the phone.
Police called Apple, but the thief had locked the phone. So they gave the phone back to the owner, who tried to unlock the phone by swiping his finger along the glass of the screen. That's when they found the scrap of paper on the screen that appeared to be from a paper-thin case.
The case apparently came from the iPhone 5, which is sold in a box with a tiny plastic sleeve that covers its screen. Wired says it's impossible for a thief to know the code needed to unlock the phone without the correct case, because it's impossible to see the code.
If you try to remove the case yourself, the screen will get damaged. The only way to remove the case is to break the screen, which means that you'll be able to see the code.
What happens if you break the screen? According to Wired, If your finger touches the glass, it causes a charge to pass through your finger. The charge is converted into a digital signal that can be read by the device's Touch ID sensor. If the sensor determines that it recognizes the fingerprint, the device unlocks.
This is a neat idea, but what happens if the thief doesn't have the correct fingerprint? Wired says the only way to prevent that is to use some kind of biometric lock, such as a fingerprint or retina scan. But that's expensive. And I don't see how a thief would know that they have to swipe the wrong finger to prevent the phone from being unlocked.
It seems to me that a better solution would be to make it impossible for a thief to remove the case.
