As an employee at a start-up it has always been a point of pride; "We'll pay my family's mortgage without any of your paycheck!" I even put myself into debt just so they could stay in their home. It sounds so great, right? It really is.

It is sad though that it got to that point; me being the breadwinner of my family, not being valued because I wasn't going to make enough money. The problem came when the CEO decided my income would decrease from 40 to 25 per hour just because I can work remote or not.

In these past five years, where software development has become an industry. Where most people can build an App. Where I can still get a job, the salary has been cut.45 per hour. If you are a junior developer and working 40 hours a week, you are barely getting two bills in the bank every two weeks.

The issue is a lot of people don't really have the ability to take the time off. We are parents and our family comes first. It is no question whether you feel like the best developer on the team, or the lowest paid developer. I know I am grateful for the jobs they do provide but we just don't have the finances to pay for it.

So there we are. It doesn't matter how qualified or what education you have, how many times you've won an MVP, or created some amazing code. When the economy is tanking (and most people's jobs are at risk) where do we fit? At the very bottom.
