How secure is a Private Internet Access VPN?

Is Private Internet Access still a good VPN?

I have used Private Internet Access for the last three years and I think it is the best VPN service I have ever used.

It offers a great connection with strong encryption and no speed throttling and it was the first VPN service to offer unlimited bandwidth. So how can a service that started out as a good one has deteriorated into a cheap one?

What happened? First and foremost, I think the main reason is the company was focused on selling bandwidth rather than selling VPN services. This made a lot of things fall apart. Their new CEO, Mr. Daniel Micciche, seems to want to change the direction of Private Internet Access.

In April 2025, they introduced a new company logo on their website and changed the look of their website. There was no need to change a company's identity, since PIA was already making an excellent product. The new look of PIA's website is more appealing to people that don't want to get purchased by companies.

So far, so good. But I heard from a lot of people that they found it very confusing to switch back to PII know I did.

I started with PIA because I needed to use Tor and I had to be able to connect to many different networks. I remember when I first registered for a free account with PIA, there were just some instructions. It said, Start your own private network at PIA (PIASN). I thought that it would be easy to set up and use. So I did just that.

Unfortunately, I found that it took me a long time to get my own private network and even longer to understand how to configure it. I still remember how frustrated I was about this problem, but it was hard to believe that there was nobody to help me. I had to figure it out by myself.

Then, it occurred to me that I was using the trial version of PIA and it was a very limited version. I asked their support team for help, and they told me that if I want to use a good, complete VPN service, I should buy a subscription. I felt very betrayed and lied to. This was my first mistake.

Private Internet Access changed. The second mistake was in July 2025.

Is PIA the strongest VPN?

Why is PIA VPN so slow?

I am currently using a PIA VPN for my wireless connection.

I am running XP home edition. I have been very satisfied with the speed of this VPN. However, the connection is much slower than my connection without it. When I start the VPN the connection speed seems to drop very low and then after a while it stabilizes at around 50% of what it was before the VPN. Is this normal?

Re: ? What OS are you running? I don't know of any slowdowns on PIA's service. I also run XP Home Edition, and while there are few differences between the two, it's my understanding that the XP Home edition has been tuned for "fast" connections, while XP Pro has been tuned for "reliable" connections.

If you have a newer version of XP Home, it might not be as optimized. In any case, you should be able to use any version of XP Pro, but you may have to adjust the connection settings. You can do that by going into the device properties, finding your network adapter, and clicking on the Advanced tab. You can see your connection type, whether it's set for "metered" or "unmetered" usage, and then you can change the connection settings.
