Which camellia is most fragrant?
(Photo: John D. Veatch)
If you're looking for a fragrant, easy-to-grow plant for your garden, look no further than the camellia. You've probably heard that they are the only fragrance that matters; the camellia is truly legendary, often called a fragrance-lover's garden. If you are lucky enough to grow one of these plants in your yard, you may see many different varieties of white, pink, and red blossoms throughout the year. With several hundred species around the world, camellias are popular favorites. Their flowers, foliage, and fruit are highly ornamental plants, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. The camellia is also known for its tolerance for dry soil. This genus of deciduous shrubs, trees, and large bushy herbaceous plants grows wild from Eurasia to Australia and all along the Pacific coast.
Did you know. That was your first lesson: You should cultivate this knowledge, which will always be a benefit to yourself and to all those with whom you have contact (Tranquil Garden, p. 1). The other lessons included how to water, seed, and transplant them. This book then goes on to include information about selecting different varieties of camellias, where to buy camellias, how to care for them, and more.
The Camellia is the oldest flowering plant in the rose family and the only group of hardy, single-trunked trees. Most commonly referred to as hydrangeas, camellias include some 300 species in more than 25 genera. These trees occur across most of the Old World continents, especially in regions temperate enough to sustain evergreen ground cover as well as deciduous growth periods. They seem equally at home in tropical and sub-tropical climates, although most prefer soils of good texture, a rich deep soil with regular mulching and regular planting. Though many grow well in the United States, the ideal location for a camellia is a sunny location that does not experience freezing temperatures. In fact, cold conditions cause the leaves to turn down or curl up at the ends. A camellia will eventually drop leaves if it is overwatered and if it has experienced prolonged exposure to frost.
Does camellia need sun or shade?
By Joanne in CA.
March 30, 2024. We are growing a garden did you know that camellia needs sun? They like a lot of sun they need a lot of sun they grow really fast and the leaves need to be dried. This plant grows really big and can be used as a huge hedge.
I would recommend comingllia for a sunny part of your garden. I have some large camellias growing now, their leaves are very thick, and they are pretty hardy and can tolerate a lot of rain.
Sun is important for a camellia, but you don't need to be in full sun. It will do fine in a spot that gets 6 to 8 hours of direct sun, especially if it gets afternoon shade in the heat of summer. If your soil is deep enough, you might want to plant them against a trellis or other support that keeps the roots from being in the shade.
My garden is in zone 9b (midsouthern California), so I do most of my gardening in full sun. But I'm not in full sun all day. The camellias I have planted have grown very quickly, and I haven't had any problems with them so far.
The other thing you want to do with a camellia is keep the water supply off the leaves. They will get very rotund, and the leaves can turn black. You can prune them back as they grow. The bigger they get, the more room they have for water.
I'm growing camellias right now, but I don't have anything ready to use as a hedge. I've only got a few plants so far. I'm not sure what I'll do with them yet. We'll see how they turn out.
The camellia in our neighbor's front yard is beautiful, but his neighbor next door has a huge hedge that blocks their view of each other. If I could take a small hedge home, I'd probably be thrilled to have it.
Camellias are pretty easy to grow from seed. They're also fast growers, so they'll fill up the ground pretty quickly if you give them adequate space. I've been growing them since 2024, and they're still doing well.
You might consider camellias for a large focal point in a flower bed.
Is camellia a good plant?
I want to make a small garden for my apartment in the city and I want to use camellias.
I want it to look good and have big blooms, but I'm not sure if camellias are a good plant. The apartment is small, so I don't think I can put more than a couple of them in the garden. Is camellias a good plant to use?
Camellias aren't actually hardy - they need to be moved indoors in the winter, which is why you don't see many in urban gardens. But they're easy to care for, even outside. You can water them regularly and keep them in a sunny spot until it's too cold to keep them outdoors. I recommend the 'Snow Crown' cultivar, as they're the most reliably hardy of all of them. They'll also give you more flowerheads than other varieties. If you find a camellia that's not quite as hardy, then try 'Empress Alexandra'.
Camellias are beautiful! They bloom every year (unless it's a dry summer). You can put many of them in your garden - they usually do fine even if they're out of direct sunlight. I'd recommend the Snow Crown variety. It's the only one I've ever seen that blooms on its own.
You can put camellias in containers, too. I've seen people using old, empty flowerpots. Just make sure the pots have drainage holes and get some kind of potting soil for the bottom.
How tall does high fragrance camellia grow?
By
NICHOLAS JOHNSON.
The botanical name of the camellia is "Ardisia." (Photograph by Chris Johnson) I've always been partial to camellia flowers. The first time I tasted camellia tea, I realized that I would be able to taste it for the rest of my life.
Camellia Tea. In a 2024 issue of The Pacific Northwest Quarterly, writer Jonathan Simek offered this on camellia flowers: "This plant grows over 1,500 feet tall in the wilds of China and Korea and up to 50 feet tall in cultivation. The flower is a large one with four petals up to 2 inches across. The fragrance is sweet and heavy, almost pungent, more or less a musky scent."
The tallest tree in Florida is a tallow tree, which grows about 1,300 feet tall. This gives you an idea how tall these small trees can grow. It may also explain why camellia growers refer to them as camellia bushes.
"Ardisia" means arid, which describes the area near the Camellia bushes' original habitat. (Photograph by Chris Johnson) The plants we see growing in front yards were originally wild plants that spread into areas surrounding lakes and rivers. They were brought back and now grow everywhere you see them.
Camellia flowers have a white petal that sits flat on its stem. (Photograph by Chris Johnson) What makes camellia tea so special? As far as the tea aspect, when was the first time that someone brewed tea from flowers? As soon as the first people tasted it, it became very popular. The Japanese had tea ceremonies that were based on tea made from camellia flowers. People also used tea made from camellia flowers as perfume.
It is important to note that the Japanese call them chsen and shyzuke. It doesn't matter what Westerners call them: Camellia flowers.
Tea made from camellia flowers still seems to be very popular. Even though they are small and small-leafed, they are easy to find in shops and specialty markets.
