For outbound traffic, GRE provides basic authentication similar to IPSEC without the additional overhead. GRE offers these added benefits and does not require specific implementation of IPSEC.

It is more flexible than other VPN protocols as it allows the use of multiple protocols (TCP, UDP, and ICMP) and multiple encryption algorithms (TLS, AES, RC4, and others) while maintaining a common underlying framework.

GRE can allow users outside of your network to connect securely and quickly to your network by sending a single TCP connection.
