What is the best VPN extension for Chrome?

Why do I need a VPN for Chrome?

We have seen the recent news surrounding Google and its involvement with the Chinese government in a project that would give access to certain Google services in China (such as the Chrome browser) only to citizens within the nation. While much of the uproar has centered around the fact that this is a project that seeks to provide Chinese citizens with access to restricted web services (such as video streaming sites) via the Chrome browser, there are definitely some privacy concerns surrounding the data collection of those services. As Google seems unwilling to say how much data is being collected from users of these services in the first place (Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, stated that no data is directly transferred in the project), one must assume that significant amounts of information are being accessed, stored and analyzed. This type of data is often collected by companies involved with cloud computing, which allows them to record all actions of their customers as they navigate the web.

Cloud Computing. It should be noted that Google Cloud is a division of Google. This division provides web applications via the cloud, which allows for users to access their data anywhere at anytime (as long as they have an internet connection). This means that you are allowing your data to reside with a third-party service (rather than on your local PC) while you are browsing the internet. A lot of the criticism of the project involving Chinese citizens seems to stem from a concern about what third-parties are collecting data from users in this country. There are many concerns related to how this data may be utilized, but the most likely scenario is that this data will be used by Google to optimize its own services and improve the content of its website(s).

To the average user, this would seem like a good thing. However, to some of us, such as privacy-conscious netizens, there is just too much question as to why Google would even want or need such data. It should be noted that the vast majority of Google searches take place in the US (the second largest search engine is Russia's Yandex), so it should make little sense for Google to be concerned with what services its users are accessing in China (unless it plans to market its products there).

This is a hard one. The best VPN service out there is one that is easy to use and is compatible with all of the major devices. It also should be easy to configure and be capable of handling the load of streaming multiple concurrent streams. If you're looking for a lightweight VPN you should look at Opera's Free VPN, I recommend it highly.

Now if you want a VPN that has native clients for Mac, Windows and Linux, then you might want to take a look at the best VPN extension for Chrome. I've got links to each of the best VPN extensions below. Click the links for more information about the extensions and links to download the extensions themselves.

Best free VPNs. If you're looking for a free VPN then Opera Free VPN is my choice. If you have an Opera Account you can access their servers from the VPN service without ever installing anything else. The downside to this is that the free accounts only work on Opera devices so if you want to use your VPN with other browsers or operating systems then you need to subscribe.

If you want something with a bit more substance then try one of the following. ExpressVPN is one of the more well known VPN providers out there. They offer both a free and premium account but their free account doesn't allow unlimited data usage. You do get unlimited device connections though which is a nice bonus.

VyprVPN. VyprVPN is another very well know VPN provider, but they focus their efforts on the Windows client with their Linux client being very light weight. This can make VyprVPN a great choice for lightweight mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

Best Pro VPNs. If you have some extra cash then I would suggest paying a bit more for a better quality VPN service. Here are some of my recommendations. NordVPN

NordVPN is an excellent all around VPN service. The paid service is expensive but you will be getting a higher quality product. The only downside to the paid service is that you won't get unlimited data but if you don't mind that then you should check them out. Mullvad

Mullvad is one of the few VPN providers that provide unlimited data, this makes their VPN much more attractive.

For any privacy conscious user browsing the web, this is a very big deal. With Google you have almost everything and there is no way to prevent its eyes to read your internet traffic, so how do you bypass that? Enter VPNs. You can use your phone for mobile security. Use VPN at home for secure browsing. But even at work if you want to work in an isolated network and browse outside internet with your office's resources, you have to install some sort of VPN app. For years, people were using VPN clients for Windows, and some popular clients like Hamachi, Hotspot VPN etc. For the past few years, the trend has changed a lot. You can use a service like OVPN or Hola instead of a VPN client and do not need a VPN client to connect to a network. Also we are seeing services like Netflix that will show you other networks outside the ones your internet provider offers so you don't need to download a VPN client when you are on your PC to be able to access Netflix content on desktop. So this article is to let you know about using various VPN services for Chrome browser, and not just a Windows client.

What I would like to mention is that this article does not cover VPNs like IPVanish or TunnelBear which you can use outside your network but inside the VPN tunnels. For example, If you get an IP from the USA and you are connecting to the US Netflix from Singapore then it is still tunneling your data through the USA so you would be connected inside a VPN tunnel, with all that entails. But this article will only cover external networks.

VPN clients that support Chrome Browser. Now, many people use services like Hola VPN or OVPN, which are easy to use and use. Both of them use proxy for their own network in order to enable you to tunnel your IP though their network and not get blocked by your IP address. These apps might not provide a complete connection to the internet, and the connection may slow down because you are tunneling your IP through the server network.

However, these apps only work on Chrome browser, if you try to use any browser other than Chrome you would not see their servers available in your browser. Because chrome browser has their own embedded web browser, called peppermint. If you can configure OVPN to work in Firefox, you will need to do that yourself.
