Does Astrill VPN still work in China?
Hi, My family and I are planning a trip to China in November and my wife wants to use Astrill VPN to access the internet.
The problem is the company was recently bought by Alibaba, and they say they cannot guarantee privacy for our information in China. Would someone here know how secure astrill is in China? Are you guys worried that we will be tracked?
This may be a very stupid question, but can someone explain the concept behind these companies and their services? If you have never heard about it, I think most people would tell you that they are a company which encrypt your information before sending it to you or a specific website you visit. So that if anyone sees the information you have sent to them or visited, they cannot understand it. You need to be the one to decrypt it for them and the information would be safe for you after you do that. So, does that mean if you're using a vpn the information that you're sending would be safe for you? If the information you're sending is not encrypted, how would they be able to tell whether it's your information or not? If it's encrypted how do they decrypt it to see if it's your information? Also, it appears that they have servers located all over the world, so does that mean they have the capability of reading whatever information you send to them?
The way VPNs work is that they establish a point-to-point connection between their own servers and your own devices and any device they are sharing that connection with. Once the connection is established, anything that either side sends to the other is encrypted using the VPN protocol so that the other side cannot read it. Therefore, if you send information to them, it is protected from prying eyes and if they can read it, it means they either are using a different protocol than the one they promised, or are being malicious. Of course, these are assumptions because this is all based on the information you provide and don't provide to them.
I just found this explanation of VPNs and their differences and I think it's quite accurate and helpful. VPNs encrypt your data by taking you over the VPN network to a server located in a different country, from where the data will be decrypted and forwarded to you.

China's internet policies are complex and ever-changing.

VPN services are banned in China. But, they are also not allowed to operate in China.
China strictly restricts access to the internet to citizens and only allows very few companies to operate international servers. So when a VPN service operates inside China, they actually use servers located in countries like Japan, the US, or Canada. The company says it's not legal to use the VPN in China, but this is because China has a history of aggressively prosecuting companies who do business with foreign companies. If you use a VPN service that is operating from within China, you'll probably be running the risk of being raided by police. You'll also be putting your privacy at risk because a VPN will let people outside of China to access information that you wouldn't want other people to see. However, if you live in a border region or within a province that allows VPN, then you're less likely to face any problems. Best VPN for China. China is one of the worst places to be trying to find a VPN service. There are few reasons for this. Firstly, there's no legal requirement for companies to comply with the country's restrictions.
Secondly, China is a massive market and businesses don't want to upset their customers. Because of this, it's hard to know which VPN services will be safe to use. If you want to be safe and avoid being jailed, then you should avoid VPN services that operate from inside China. These will typically be hosted in countries like the US, the UK, or Canada. However, if you live in a border area, then you're less likely to be caught up in China's aggressive internet surveillance.
What VPN works in China in 2024?
China's censorship and blocking of websites is the fastest growing industry, where a massive number of web traffic is blocked through DNS and VPN filters in China.
By 2026, China will become one of the key global leaders, and a major market for VPN technologies. As Internet becomes more popular, even mobile users will find their interest turning to the VPNs technology as an alternative to get online in countries with no access to internet.
So what is the best way to gain access to unrestricted online content? If you happen to be in China, there is no easy way to avoid restrictions unless you change your IP address. But, if you are outside of China, VPNs will let you see the site without restriction. With the rising popularity of Internet and mobile devices, everyone including businessmen, students, and casual users are getting exposed to Internet and its vast content that is readily available in every corner of the world.
Access blocked online content in China. China is known for its strict online censorship and monitoring of websites, where all websites are banned if they have some content that displeases the government. Some websites can also be deleted from Google search index, if they violate the new rules of Chinese government.
Accessed websites are shown in gray in the image below, which shows the different categories of sites, some of them cannot be accessed. Even though VPN works in all countries, in China it is very clear that you cannot use any VPN service unless you change your IP address, meaning you are at risk of being caught in the VPN blocks. The website is blocked using a combination of technology: First, the country's main Internet connection backbone provider, China Telecom, redirects the user traffic. The traffic is sent through CSP servers before routing it to the destination website or website domain. This means that China Telecom or China Unicom blocks every domain that sends traffic to the Internet Protocol (IP) address that they set. Once traffic goes to the IP address they set, this traffic is routed through a Chinese gateway service known as GreatFire.org, which monitors access to websites in China. Any website accessed by using a proxy in China will likely be blocked due to the Great Firewall policies.
Another approach is to block all websites by using the Baidu URL Filter, which is built into the company's cloud system.
