You are right: I was just too slow to catch on to this aspect. Yes, it does use a regular expression engine. But in fact, when we say regexp filtering engine, we mean, our code does most of the filtering, while your browser does the hard work of detecting what to block and what not (or at least, how the server tells the web-browser that this or that text is OK to be displayed, and how it should be blocked).

However, the AdGuard filters themselves are still regexps. Which means, we just have less work to do to make sure that the regexp patterns that we need to validate ads in our ad servers actually function as expected. Since the patterns themselves are the whole point of AdGuard, it's a big win in terms of resource utilization (by design, AdGuard makes your browser much more resource-efficient than before it). Besides that, our regexps are so fast to create and match a string against them that I'm sure there's hardly any noticeable difference compared to browsers having native JavaScript support for regexps.

I'll definitely take AdGuard's word on that. What am I to believe? Our filtering engine is not perfect. Not by far. We still don't understand many websites very well. But most of these websites aren't very good at creating ads either. And some sites do understand what happens when a user opens their mobile or tablet version of the website, and have built something that works well. But the vast majority have not done so yet. We just can't detect that. This means, those pages are still getting served ads. So our blacklisting engine filters all ads but fails to blacklist such websites completely. Which I'm hoping is also mostly because the web-designers haven't figured out how to get around it.

We are going to keep on investigating this and are ready to start whitelisting such sites when we have a working solution for everyone. Why wouldn't it just block them all? Surely a lot of sites would fall within that blacklist, with the exception of your own. Would whitelisting help here?
