Is PIA still a good VPN?
I've been using PIA as a VPN for a few years now, but I've had some recent concerns about the reliability of their service.
Specifically, PIA doesn't have an exit node in Australia, and while they claim to have servers in other locations (for example, I see a location in Sydney in the Country section of the PIA website), the actual server IPs are hard to pin down.
I found a few reviews of PIA on the internet, which seemed to indicate that the company was doing things like hijacking and redirecting your traffic through their own servers (so you might not even be using the real PIA). So I decided to do a little more research and see if I could find anything out.
What I found. The most recent article I found was from 2024, but it looked to me like the same PIA as I've used in the past. That is, it still had servers in Melbourne, Sydney, and Canberra, and it still didn't have an exit node in Australia. It was also still using DNS-based IP leaks, so it was basically the same as what it was when I first signed up.
At that point I just had to do a bit more research. I found that a post from May 2024 had a comment from PIA explaining that they had just acquired a company called Blue Coat, which was apparently an enterprise grade security company. So I decided to look into that.
Turns out that Blue Coat has been around since 1996, and they have their own web page with a lot of information about them. It seems that they are a DNS-based VPN, which sounds like a good thing to me, but they have a lot of servers around the world, so I wanted to see if they were listed on any of the PIA servers.
That's when I found out that the PIA servers are actually hosted by the same company as Blue Coat. And I was pretty sure that they weren't supposed to be doing that.
So that means that the PIA servers are probably not doing the DNS-based leaks that I had seen on other VPNs. The problem is that it also means that the servers are hosted by Blue Coat, which means that they are potentially at risk of being compromised.
Is PIA better than Nord reddit?
I'm new to the group, I just signed up and I was looking at the "newbies" page and saw something that really got me thinking.
? I know that they're both social news sites, but for me personally, I like the idea of PIA better. Why? I like the feel of PIA better, it's much more clean and polished. I can't explain it, but I feel like I'm in a much more "modern" place. The layout of the site is much better, and the comments have a much more "natural" feel to them. The whole thing just seems much more "user friendly."
On the other hand, the Nord subreddit is more "personal." It's kind of like a mix between an online message board and a forum. You get the best of both worlds. It feels a bit like a community of friends hanging out.
As much as I love PIA, I've also learned that it's a lot more work to keep up with a subreddit than it is a forum. But I like having the reddit background, too. It's a nice nostalgic feeling.
I think it would be cool to have a poll where people could weigh in their thoughts. The community of Reddit is not based on the forums. Forums are very structured, and based on rules. Reddit is based on rules, and then the community builds itself.
And if you see a post in your subreddit that you don't like, downvote it. If it goes to the top, it will be removed by the mods (if it doesn't get removed). Just don't be an asshole and ignore it, or make it into a fight.
I don't think there's anything wrong with a forum being based on rules, and I don't think there's anything wrong with having a community based on rules. What's wrong is if you get tired of your community being based on rules, and want to do things your own way.
This is what happened to PIA, they decided they wanted to be more like a forum than a subreddit. So they got rid of the rules, and have become a mess.
If you look at the PIA subreddits, they're more like Nord.
