What does reset network settings on iPhone do?

My iPhone was reset to factory settings and now, I am unable to connect to my WLAN.

It depends how many network settings you have set. If there is only 1 then try to reset it if the factory setting did not work then reset the last one you set.If the phone is unlocked and you don't set the network mode to wifi hotspot then set it to wifi hotspot. Reset to factory.

I just had my daughter (who doesn't know the WiFi password or anything else about her phone) send me a pic of her settings screen on her iPhone, where she says the settings are set to Network: WPA2 WLAN: none, so she's thinking that it's working ok. Then I got her to reset to factory. And that didn't fix it!

We did that, and nothing worked. Still no internet, and no other network settings either. Do we need to add to the fact that she's never used this phone before, to "unlock" the phone? Not sure if that's a good idea. I don't want to "unlock" the phone and then find out it's not unlocked? But the phone is running fine, apart from no Internet.
