How do I import an XML file in Google Sheets?

I have created an XSD Schema which I will use to create my own XML document.

My question is how do I import my XML document in Google Sheets? I have been working off of this website: But I haven't been able to import my XML document. I am using ImportXML in Excel 2025.

I would like to import data from Xml file to a table. For example:

Maybe what you mean is that if the xml content looks fine on your end, but it gets transformed by the parser, the xml content is just not right (or at least formatted). If the xml is written right, ImportXML automatically inserts empty name elements.

But since xml does not have internal rules and is text based (meaning - there is no hierarchy or nesting), you need to control xml on your own when using ImportXML. It will save you only very few cases though, since the xml you are describing sounds like it will be very hard to work with.

The documentation says: Importxml imports data from external sources into a Google Sheet. I have tried using it to import my data from a website, but it's not doing anything. I also tried importing a file that I have made. The only thing the sheet does is display the same content.

Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks in advance. To answer my own question: The Importxml function can only be used to import data from websites or other similar services such as .csv files.

If you google "importxml website", you'll find a few examples of how to import XML data. You can do it like this.

Create a spreadsheet with two columns. Column A should be named "Website" and column B "Import".

In the body of your spreadsheet, use the following code (or similar): =importxml(""&A1&B1). You'll need to replace "" with the URL of the website you want to import. You may also need to add this line above the code. It lets you select the header row that you want to import the first row in that data from the XML table. If you don't include this line, it will import every row as a column header.
