Is BlockSite any good?
BlockSite was created by Chris Devereux, a designer from Vancouver BC.
It's an easy, lightweight client that lets you access your Dropbox, GoogleDrive, OneDrive and other accounts from your browser. You can store/share a document, image or video and choose the level of access for a document/image. You can even edit documents with it.
Is this any good? It is quite impressive actually. Being able to access files stored online is something we've all wanted to do in the past, and now with BlockSite, we finally have that option. You don't need a computer. You don't need to install anything. You just open a webpage, access your account, and you're good to go.
The only feature I'm not crazy about is the inability to select a "read only" option. That is, there's no control to be able to decide when you'll be able to view, but not modify a file. In other words, if you're sharing a spreadsheet for example, everyone can see the sheet, but no one else can change the values of the cells. In most cases, this is not an issue, but if you're sharing a document for editing purposes, you'd definitely want to make it possible for just yourself to modify the content without changing the view for everyone else.
Overall, however, it's a pretty cool tool and I highly recommend trying it out.
Is there a free alternative to BlockSite?
I'm using the tool BlockSite for blocking trackers, it works perfectly.
The one negative thing I don't like with it is you have to disable the built in privacy protection and search history feature on your browser. This is very inconvenient for me since I use Internet Explorer 10, so I would really like a free tool that has this option enabled.
If no, what is the best free alternative? If you are thinking of a good block tracking software - try. Yes it does. As it's free software. I just need to make a short script that does that :)
You could take a look at www.f-droid.org and you can get apps for Linux there.
The best that I know about, from reading previous discussions, is "Blokada". I never used it though.
I've found that it comes down to: 1) Will the software stop the trackers? 2) Will it stop the hackers? (as long as someone is trying to get to your site by hacking, you're screwed anyway.) 3) Will it leave your system cleaner than before the program started? 4) Will it cause the browser to crash or hang (which can put everyone who's also using the computer in trouble.) 5) Are there any limitations that would keep it from meeting your expectations? If you think your personal data isn't a problem, and you're willing to take the chance, go for it. If you're concerned, maybe think about the potential pitfalls before you agree.
I think you are being a bit over-concerned. Yes, you don't have access to any personally identifiable information, but that's not enough to worry about when you already have a free web browser, email client, file transfer client and browser extensions.
It depends on your needs, but in my opinion most people can just use the same features they're already using and trust that these tools are sufficient. For example, you can easily set BlockSite to keep tabs open. There is an exception, if you want to use the Google Search history (you can't), or use a "tracking safe" browser (not many).
