How legit is gua sha?
I am new to martial arts and have been studying jiu jitsu for a few months.
I have read that gua sha is not legit and I have heard that it is really the worst thing you can do.
I have asked several people about it and they have said it is a great way to build strength and work on the upper body. I am just a little confused on if it is legit or not. Can someone help? Gua Sha is legit. As is any of the Tai Chi, Yoga, Hatha Yoga, etc. The reason why people think it is bad is because it was practiced by the Shaolin monks in China. Some people equate anything that is practiced by monks with "good", so people assume that just because it is practiced by monks it must be good.
The Shaolin monks, by themselves, were good at what they did (and still are), but they did not use any of the more modern forms of Kung Fu (like Tai Chi, Tai Chi Chuan, Yoga, Hatha Yoga, etc.) The Shaolin monks (and other schools that have "secret" moves) did not use any of these "modern" forms of Kung Fu (like Tai Chi, Tai Chi Chuan, Yoga, Hatha Yoga, etc.) because they did not believe that those forms worked. They believed that Shaolin Kung Fu was enough.
Tai Chi, Tai Chi Chuan, Yoga, Hatha Yoga, etc. Were all developed after the Shaolin monks left China.
That is why people have a hard time accepting any form of Kung Fu. Because they were developed AFTER the Shaolin monks left China.
The Shaolin monks (and other schools that have "secret" moves) did not use any of these "modern" forms of Kung Fu (like Tai Chi, Tai Chi Chuan, Yoga, Hatha Yoga, etc.
Can anyone use gua sha?
I've been practicing GUA SHA for the last week or so and feel like I'm starting to get something (more like feeling the prickle of my Sha power!) I would really like to connect with a higher self or whatever, through this technique but I have no idea if I'm doing it properly. Do you ever feel like you are connecting with something? Is there any way to tell whether you are connecting properly? Also, can anyone tell me why I should use my eyes closed as oppose to using them open? I used to do it while lying down, so now I usually sit up. I find that eye closure makes it easier to relax and "get high" or whatever, but when I got into krav maga they taught me to keep my eyes open because it gives better focus on you're enemy (you can still visualize but be more aware of your attacks).
If you want true power, learn to practice the old art of the samurai sword and other ancient weapons. This is probably one of the most misunderstood practices. I first learned GUA SHA after practicing aikido a couple of times and doing some kyudo. That's my personal background. It's a completely different kind of work. I think that the martial arts are an extension of the body. We don't do that in Aikido. I'm not sure if you'd even want to in GUA SHBut it's good to see some people out there practicing the right method (maybe) in all cases.
I would say it's not necessary to do either one. The main difference is that one concentrates and trains the qi in order to achieve greater harmony with your internal organs - that's done in gua sha For real connection though, the key is to really concentrate on what you are 'hearing' or getting from your qi - because its that feeling or 'hint' of what you are missing that really lets you know that you're going in the right direction! You're just training your brain (your qi) to get used to the feeling - like your tongue can now feel anything - and to the feeling of knowing you haven't done this for a while! Gua sha is an important part of Taoist internal training but there is no point in looking at your arm.it might not be there the next day.
What do dermatologists think of gua sha?
I haven't practiced any kind of dermatology for over ten years and I don't expect to have much use for gua sha from now on.
However, some of my patients are always asking me about gua sha. So it's something that keeps popping up. I've seen gua sha as a "cure all" for everything: pimples, wrinkles, blackheads. Even psoriasis and cellulitis have been treated with this technique. All in all, gua sha has become quite popular lately. What do you think of gua sha? Will it work or is it a waste of time? Why don't you give it a try, if you haven't already? Is it expensive? Is there a risk? How can you learn to do gua sha properly? It is most probably a placebo effect. If one uses gua sha, then maybe it will feel better and not so painful. I don't think it is going to help because I think there is no benefit on top of what you have. You just get the impression that it does help because it feels good.

. But I was not satisfied at all - it just didn't work. I am also skeptical about it working anyway. Gua Sha works when there is a "blockage", which is why they call it the king of the massage. Gua Sha is used to massage and unblock some blockages from your body, and it has proven its efficacy in relieving muscular pain (eg, tennis elbow) as well as healing a wound, removing skin tumors and stimulating lymph circulation.
What is the difference between Graston and gua sha?
Graston and gua sha both are Chinese tools.
Graston, invented in 1949, was developed to relieve stress and pain. Graston is a gentle massage tool that you can use over your body, as a self-treatment. Graston is widely used in clinics for its therapeutic effects. According to most practitioners, graston will reduce depression and make people more open minded, and help them become more relaxed. Graston may be used for massage all parts of your body like head, shoulders, back, buttocks, abdomen, inner thighs, outer thighs, feet, calves, and forearms. As of 2024, the number of physicians certified to perform graston therapy is in excess of 200. Graston therapy is widely accepted by physical therapists and acupuncturists.
Gua sha, another kind of soft tissue massage, was invented in China in the 1950s, and was quickly introduced into Hong Kong. The main aim of gua sha is to massage internal organs, such as, liver, stomach, spleen, lung and heart. Graston therapy is gentle while gua sha is aggressive. Graston therapy is good for muscle pain and chronic illness, while gua sha therapy is useful for cancer patients.
What does the word mean "graston" in Chinese? Graston is an alternative name for gua sha, which is similar to the Western word "massage" and means squeeze. Who invented the graston massage tool? The inventor is Professor Shao Ming Li, director of the Physical Therapy Center at the University of Hong Kong. In his book "Massage" published in 1966, he mentions a type of treatment called gua sha, invented more than one hundred years ago. His invention of the gua sha therapy is the first published evidence in China that is considered to have invented the graston tool, which was patented and licensed to a Hong Kong company.
Since then, thousands of therapists around the world have used and improved on this revolutionary therapeutic tool. What are the pros and cons of graston massage? According to a recent study, graston massage may have better effects than massage alone. Graston is safe, cheap, convenient, and no matter where you are. It is not only suitable for bedridden patients but also for sportsmen to increase their endurance.
