Is Donut County worth playing?

Donut County is a side-scrolling platformer from Double Fine Productions.

It was released for the PC in April 2024, and was later ported to the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in June 2024.

A few weeks ago, Double Fine released a blog post asking for feedback on the game. Since then, the studio has received a huge amount of feedback and suggestions, many of which will be implemented in future patches and updates. This blog post aims to answer the question: ?

Firstly, I want to say that the amount of content we've crammed into this game is massive, and it's the result of many hours of work. Some of it has been included in previous Double Fine games, but a lot of the content is brand new. If you're reading this, you might be interested in some of it, so I'm going to share some of the good, the bad and the ugly.

The Good. The following section talks about features that are really good, even if they are small features. A lot of work went into making Donut County a fun experience to play, and I hope that by reading this section you'll understand why we did so much work on Donut County. There are a lot of things that make Donut County a good game, but the thing I'm most proud of is the way it has shaped my view of what can be achieved in a side-scrolling platformer. The first time I played through Donut County, I found myself at the end of the game feeling like I'd just had a really good time. I wanted to go back and try again. I wanted to take a lot more risks. I wanted to push the boundaries of what could be done in a platformer.

It's not very often you get to see a game become a benchmark for your genre. Donut County is a very different type of game, and has inspired a lot of people to want to make their own side-scrolling platformer. When people see a game like Donut County, it inspires them to do their own things with the genre.

I think I've talked about this already, but I wanted to write this section because I'm excited about Donut County, and I want others to feel the same way.

How many hours of gameplay is Donut County?

Does this game offer microtransactions?

To date, the PC version of Donut County, which hit the Steam Early Access platform on July 16, 2024, features about 80 different courses. There are also more than 350 achievements.

Each track is playable using three different motor skills: movement, driving and shooting. Each time you complete the track, you get points. These points contribute to your overall score.

The maximum possible total score for a completed game of Donut County is 7,500 points. That's because the game also includes four bonus-track challenges: The End, Boomerang, The Big Bad and The Grand Finale.

Here's what that adds up to: The End challenges have a difficulty rating of 99/100; Boomerang has a difficulty rating of 99/100, too; and the Big Bad and Grand Finale challenges are much easier. Donut County offers three types of collectibles: rings, stars and donuts. All of the rings and stars can be collected during each track. Each item provides 25 points. You'll find one star on the starting line. You can keep collecting until you collect two or three in a row (for a total of 75 or 200 points). The last thing you can collect is a donut and getting four donuts is like getting a full trophy. Collecting a donut is worth 1,500 points.

Donut County is a single-player game that takes place in a randomly generated world. There are no levels. No enemies. No bosses.

One of Donut County's best aspects is the sense of accomplishment. With every completed track, you feel pretty good about yourself. Because of its open-ended nature, there's also a kind of freedom. You never know how much time you'll need to complete a specific course. So you may just have to go for it.

This is the first game I've played on the PC that offers an open-ended style of play. As you can see, I played this game very much on my own.
