Can someone with mac tell me if OpenVPN works with Tunnelblick?

The problem is because OpenVPN uses DNS to select the remote server. If the DNS settings on your network and that of the OpenVPN server are not the same, your router will resolve the host name of the OpenVPN server (but only by using the DNS servers on the OpenVPN server), but you won't be able to connect to it! You can either set up a DNS service on the OpenVPN server (or use a free DNS service) or use Tunnelblick's proxy service (see below). The way Tunnelblick sets up OpenVPN is quite nice since it allows you to access all your network services when you are connected to a VPN (including web sites, etc.) When using Tunnelblick's OpenVPN feature, you don't access internet sites while connected to the VPN. All internet sites send their requests to Tunnelblick's proxy server, which forwards the request on to the OpenVPN server and returns the response. When OpenVPN reconnects, it is given a new IP address (as specified in the .ovpn configuration file) from Tunnelblick's proxy server.

This means the "connection pool" used for OpenVPN consists of the IP addresses assigned to clients when they are connected to Tunnelblick's proxy server. This is why you need to be sure to choose the correct connection settings in Tunnelblick's Network and Security settings page. It's a bit like selecting different pool balls for your snooker game.

Yes. Tunnelblick includes a very useful tool called the "Pool Editor", which allows you to see exactly which IP addresses have been assigned to your VPN connections when they are connected to Tunnelblick's proxy server.

When you open Tunnelblick's Network and Security settings page, go to the Advanced Settings button at the top right corner of the page. You will then see the following window: Click on the Pool Editor button.
