Hi, just wondering what people's opinion is about eggs.
I live in the UK and have been told that chickens don't need to be kept in a fridge but that eggs should be kept in the fridge. I've also been told that they lose nutrition if kept in a fridge for long periods of time. Personally I never keep eggs in the fridge but I do cook them and always leave the eggs at room temperature. What are the views of others?
We've had chicken in our house for years, and not only do we keep them in the refrigerator, we keep eggs, too. Our advice has been that the eggs will last longer if you refrigerate them, and you may notice any difference in how long the eggs last at room temperature, either, but it's easier to remember to store your eggs in a refrigerator rather than letting them sit out at room temperature, especially since so many people forget to refrigerate them. But, personally, I buy my eggs from a reliable grocery store which has its own free-range chicken facilities where chickens are raised without confinement. They don't need to be refrigerated.
Eggs can stay out at room temp and be perfectly fine. My eggs from our coop always come from a barn and from hens that aren't kept confined. Sometimes we might have more eggs than the freezer could hold. That is the norm at my house.
If you're asking "do chickens need to be kept in a fridge" - yes. There is no such thing as 'free range chickens' though; they either come from a factory with artificial lights and space and diet or they're on your property with natural daylight. I'd say eggs coming from one of those sources would still need to be refrigerated.
