Can a Mac be used as a hotspot?

I was wandering if I can use my Mac as a hotspot so that other devices can connect to internet through it.

I was wondering if I can use Wifi Direct on my iMac and what type of connection do I need to set on the iMac? Is there any advantage to using Wifi direct vs. USB? My Mac supports Wifi direct so does it support USB?

Is there any reason why I should not use a PC? I have a friend who would be interested in this but he is Windows oriented and doesn't know how to do this. A Mac is an Apple device and all Apple products are supported by Apple's own WiFi (or cellular) hotspots and Apple's own wireless Internet service. It sounds like you're using the same WiFi, which you can configure under your device's settings.

Some of the iOS devices support USB tethering. If your friend has a phone that can tether to his Mac, he should be able to get connected to the internet using this method.

I don't know of a way to do it on a PC, but it seems like a reasonable question for Super User.

This was enough to get my Linksys working as a "Virtual" WiFi Router.
