Does a gua sha actually work?
I've heard it is supposed to but, all I have is a bag of rice and some water, what is the "magic bullet" you are talking about?
As a side note, do you find that doing the gua sha helps or hinders with digestion? Does it help relieve headaches, anxiety, or any other problems? Well they certainly do cause headaches. Its more of an internal detox.I have had my best results by doing it daily after every meal.
I started gua sha with a bag of brown rice I was able to get at a bulk food store. In my experience you need to add more water (1 tsp. If I remember right). It takes about 20 minutes per bag to remove the toxins and to feel the benefits I had. Its basically an exercise. You massage the bag as it spins in the container.
A friend taught me how to do it. There is no secret or magic bullet. Its just a method to bring circulation to areas of the body that may be inflamed from a high stress diet/lifestyle.
Gua Sha is just the name. I would say it's "an internal, detox, exercise."
I think you may have been referring to "Ki," or chi (for those unfamiliar, chi is energy). I think most yoga teachers recommend keeping it up (and in) through practice but I do not do so myself. Gua sha is a simple, inexpensive way to do it that can be done daily without any training.
I've heard of both gua sha and Shiatsu. I've never practiced either but I know it helps bring circulation to certain points on the body, particularly the shoulders, but also the legs, lower back, stomach and face.
The gua sha movements are often used in chi kung (qigong) and I find it quite relaxing as well as detoxifying. There's also a type of exercise called "Tai Chi" (or Chi Kung) that some people swear by for longevity. Tai Chi is said to give you good balance, coordination and the ability to focus. Here's a quick video that gives an example of how it works and how its done.
What is the difference between IaSTM and gua sha?
I have used both of these techniques, but I would like to know what are the differences between the two?
What is the difference between the two? What advantages does gua sha have over IaSTM? Why is one used in more than one culture and the other isn't? They both purport to stimulate blood circulation and they both do so through a technique called Guasha or the finger massage. The main difference is that gua sha works the fingers and palms (as well as other parts of the body), whereas IaSTM focuses one specific point, the 'I' point, which is located on the perineum. It's not clear why IaSTM is not practiced by many cultures, as it's something many traditions have. The only one I am aware of is the Bali tribe, as this is what was passed down through my family. To this day, the women of my family still use it and they don't see a problem with it.
A great book on gua sha is Guasha Therapy, A Guide to the Ancient Form of Chi Kung (by Joseph Wu).
