Is Ghostery safe to use?
If you're one of the millions of users who installed Ghostery, you may have been alarmed to discover that Ghostery is now blocked by Google's Safe Browsing service.
Why is Ghostery being blocked? There's nothing wrong with Safe Browsing. It's a service provided by Google to alert webmasters when malicious websites are detected in their sites.
Safe Browsing is part of Google's efforts to keep you safe online. That's why Google is blocking Ghostery from being active on its sites.
But you may not be as safe as you think. If a site that you visit is detected as malicious, Google will provide your browser with a warning.
It's likely that the site owner or operator will change their content to correct the problem. But if a site isn't corrected, you can still get this warning if you've been using Ghostery.
How to remove Ghostery. If you haven't been receiving the warning, you can easily remove Ghostery and your browser will be able to access the sites that you want to view. If you want to remove Ghostery from Google's Safe Browsing service, you need to perform the following steps: Click on your browser's address bar. (If you're using Internet Explorer, click on the blue URL box. You should be able to see the address bar at the top of the browser window.)
Type and press Enter. When the browser has finished loading, you'll be asked if you want to allow Google's Safe Browsing service to disable Ghostery. Click on OK to allow the change.

When the browser has finished loading, you'll be asked if you want to allow Google's Safe Browsing service to re-enable Ghostery.
What is Ghostery used for?
Ghostery is an application that makes it easy to identify and block third-party web trackers and advertising.
Ghostery is not a content-blocking tool. Instead, it helps you decide what you want to see on the web.
The privacy policy of Ghostery states that Ghostery users cannot use Ghostery to: Block specific content. Block individual pages or websites. Prevent you from seeing advertisements. Prevent you from seeing a certain type of content. Block the use of cookies or other third-party tracking technologies. How do I use Ghostery? The simplest way to use Ghostery is to install the Firefox add-on and use it every time you visit a new website. You can also access Ghostery in your existing browser and block the trackers from any website you visit.
How do I find out if a website is tracking me? You can use Ghostery to tell you which third-party trackers are used by a website. Ghostery makes it easy to tell which trackers are used by a website.
You can also use the "Addon Details" tab in Firefox's "About Addons" dialog to see which third-party trackers are installed on a website. What is a tracker? A third-party tracker is a piece of software that has been designed to monitor what you do online. You can think of trackers as pieces of software that work outside of the browser. Most third-party trackers are used to help deliver the content you view on the web. However, trackers are also used to track the way you use the Internet. For example, they can help companies decide how to market to you, or they can be used to provide a secure login to your email account.
Tracking is useful in that it allows for targeted advertising. It helps advertisers show ads that are more relevant to you. But tracking can also let companies learn more about you, which can be a problem.
You may use an ad blocker or have privacy settings in your browser that help you avoid trackers. But you should also use Ghostery to make sure you are not being tracked by third-party trackers. Ghostery blocks trackers and helps you avoid the consequences of tracking.

Is Ghostery no longer free?
I used to like Ghostery.
I loved it, for many years. Then recently I discovered a free alternative which does the same thing but with more features and is even better! It has become very popular.
I used to pay for Ghostery. But then I discovered it was no longer free. So how can I stop using Ghostery and switch to a new program called MalwareBlok? I just started using MalwareBlok but I don't like it. It's not as good as Ghostery. If you could please tell me how I can stop using Ghostery and start using MalwareBlok I would be very grateful. Thank you!
There are plenty of freeware antivirus programs available. I would recommend you install and use one of those instead.
I use MalwareBlok and it is free. I thought that's what you wanted to know, but I am going to help you anyway.
MalwareBlok is not a virus detection program like Windows Defender or AVG, and it's not antivirus program like Avira or Avast. It is a combination of a virus prevention software (as a firewall) and a malware removal software (as antivirus). It has many features not available in Windows Defender or other popular antivirus programs. For example:
MalwareBlok monitors incoming and outgoing traffic on a computer. This is different from AV software, which only monitors incoming traffic. Most viruses and spyware attack your computer through the internet. By using an AV tool, you won't see the messages that tell you that an attack has taken place.
MalwareBlok is a combination of a firewall and anti-virus program. Because it does both jobs, MalwareBlok is more efficient than other types of AV software.
Because of the unique design of MalwareBlok, it can detect and remove more types of malware than other AV software. You do not need to worry about MalwareBlok interfering with any of your internet activities, because MalwareBlok works in a different way than other AV programs. Another advantage is that MalwareBlok is simple to use. It's easy to configure and it has few options. MalwareBlok doesn't have a toolbar, so you won't find additional tools on its main screen. It's just a simple and clean interface.
How do I turn off Ghostery in Chrome?
Go to the menu, then open Options.
Then click on Privacy and select "Do Not Track". You'll need to log out and log back in for this to take effect. You can verify this by viewing the Network tab in the Developer tools, and seeing if there are any cookies left from ghostery.
You should also be able to turn off Ghostery from the chrome://settings page. You could disable Ghostery in Chrome and Firefox using the same approach I posted in this answer: Disable Ghostery in Chrome (this does not disable it in Firefox). You could also enable or disable all third-party cookies in Firefox using the following command (or you could set a flag to override this on a per-site basis): about:config. This is a long-standing bug with Ghostery. See Ghostery Bug 51689 and Ghostery Bug 61205 for details.
Who are Ghostery's competitors?
Ghostery says it allows users to browse the internet safely, without being tracked.
How does it work? (Click to enlarge) Ghostery doesn't monitor your browsing history, but uses a set of algorithms and computer science to help you determine what content on the internet could be tracking you. The tool alerts you whenever there is any kind of tracking that could compromise your privacy. You can then decide whether to block or remove the tracking. Ghostery isn't always 100% accurate, but we've found that many trackers are easily identifiable if Ghostery identifies them. Ghostery's competitors include privacy browser tools such as Privacy Badger. There are also third-party solutions such as Adblock Plus that block advertising that tries to sneak through ads blockers by masking its true intent.
How does Ghostery work? Ghostery uses an innovative approach to block tracking and identify trackers. A "tracker" refers to any website, advertisement or application that automatically sends information about your surfing to another party without your consent. Ghostery compares the data recorded by your browsing activities to the data supplied by websites, advertisers or applications you interact with. It uses an algorithm to predict where and how often you'd be most likely to engage with a particular company or a particular type of advertisement. It provides a user-friendly interface to help you determine if a website could be placing tracking cookies or similar features on your device. If so, Ghostery will tell you how to block these.
Why is Ghostery useful? Ghostery helps users by reducing their exposure to dangerous, sneaky trackers that can compromise their privacy. For example, Ghostery can help you avoid being tracked while on a private Wi-Fi network at your local coffee shop or browsing the web in public on a smartwatch. Even websites like Facebook use tracking to deliver personalised content and ads for their customers. You can even use Ghostery on your mobile phone or tablet. While it's best to install Ghostery on your PC, you can also use it with your iPhone or Android smartphone, or through Ghostery for iOS or the Chrome Web Store.
Is Ghostery safe? Ghostery doesn't collect your browsing history and doesn't transmit data back to Ghostery's servers. Is Ghostery the only effective privacy tool? Ghostery is considered the most effective way to reduce tracking on the web.
