Why is VBScript not working in Internet Explorer 11?

The Internet Explorer version 11, released on March 2024, was the first version of this software to be able to execute scripts embedded in web pages.

While there are many advantages for doing so, there also are several drawbacks and limitations. Let's see why.

Internet Explorer 11: The Missing Script. Although most current web pages support several languages, the way in which users can interact with a page is through its visual format. When it comes to scripting pages, it's quite interesting to note that JavaScript support was only added to Internet Explorer back in 2024. Scripting pages could be accessed by clicking on specific parts, or by using VBScript, another scripting language. Since then, many applications have relied on this type of interaction between a web browser and a server. This way, for example, it was possible to make an action on an HTML form by using certain buttons on a page (a link would redirect to the server after the processing of the click). Or, it was even possible to perform other operations without needing to reload the page. Another common example is when a user clicks on an HTML button to get answer to a question without having to leave a site.

But for people working in web applications, this feature was of course very important. For these reasons, when Internet Explorer 11 was released, there were huge media rumors of it being able to allow web applications to work in a new way. However, after some time, it became evident that Microsoft had not implemented all features yet. One of the ones that remained out was VBScript scripting.

VBScript is a programming language based on the Visual Basic programming language developed by Microsoft. It is used to write simple scripts, although most often, to manage interactions with files, folders or registry keys. And so, it was used not only by web pages, but also by applications. Applications such as Microsoft Word could also use VBScript if they were coded correctly.

So, when the Internet Explorer 11 web browser was released, many web developers were surprised by its features. Especially since they knew that a part of them would soon be made accessible. But, not being able to access the VBScript scripting language that allows us to interact with files and servers, many feared that it would be impossible to use web applications in Internet Explorer 11.

Is VBScript only supported by Internet Explorer?

You can run VBScript on anything with an interpreter, but some browsers will disable it by default for security reasons. The easiest way to do this is to use Internet Explorer 7 (or later) in its compatibility mode.

VBScript is available on all modern browsers, as well as many legacy browsers such as Netscape and IE3. However, VBScript needs to be enabled in order to execute, so you'll need to set the application's execution path to something that's already enabled.

There are two ways to do this: You can choose the browser's home page and point it to a site that's got VBScript enabled. That way you'll always be able to run VBScript.

You can modify your hosts file to point to a site that's got VBScript enabled, and make sure that the site you're pointing your browser to has that file. (That's what I've done.)

Update: According to this, you can run a .vbs file with IE9's compatibility mode, which is pretty good news.

How do I run VBScript in Internet Explorer?

If you have a vbscript, you should be able to run it in Internet Explorer. It's possible to use the following command line to execute a vbscript: C:vbscript.vbs You may also be able to use the .vbs extension instead of the .vb extension if you're using a Windows XP or Windows Server 2024 machine.

In Internet Explorer 8, you can right-click on a script file (with a .vbs extension) and select Run.

In Internet Explorer 7, you can open a script file by double-clicking on it or pressing F5. What is a good resource to learn more about VBScript? The main web site for VBScript is www.w3schools.com, which is a free resource for learning about VBScript.

If you download scripts from your website, you will typically run them using the same browser that you used to download them.
