What happened to Google Cast extension?

I have version installed for chrome and tried to connect my iPhone 5 but it simply fails.

Have Google changed this feature? Where can I find a description about what features Google Cast is now capable of? How exactly can I send an HDMI movie from the iPhone to TV?
For starters, Google Cast is not yet supported by iPhone. At least not an official Google Cast extension for iOS.

Google does offer an HTML5 version of this app called Cast Your Phone which works on Safari as well as on Chrome. The extension doesn't offer much functionality than to send videos from your phone to your chromecast or Google smart speakers. I would recommend using this app over a standard chromecast app for a simple reason; It looks better!

The problem for Apple owners is you can not set up your Chromecast on iOS nor can you use third-party apps designed for use on Android and run on iPhone or iPad. To set up a chromecast for casting the screen of your iPhone to a television, you need a compatible Chromecast device like the Google Chromecast dongle or the new Google Chromecast built in tv. There is also a Chromecast app that runs on iOS natively (unfortunately only for iPhone 4S & iPad 2). For more information read Apple Support Article here on Chromecast on iOS.

If you bought the original Chromecast, you may also want to buy an official Chromecast for your iPad and iPhone that plugs into USB. I don't have an article explaining that here in the blog but there is a Google Support article.

What is the video Cast extension for Chrome?

We use the new version of Google Chrome, which doesn't seem to like previous Chrome plugins.

Is this an add-on or something else? I've only just discovered Google Chrome, so please explain it as if you are talking to a 6 yr old who just joined school. Also, it worked for me on my old desktop using Windows XP, then the video disappeared and the last thing I do remember seeing was the new video at the top of the browser window before that.
