Why was Keanu not in Speed 2?
This was a question that has been bugging me for years.
It's like I ask myself why is The Hulk fighting for good? That's a stupid question, because there isn't a whole lot of good left in the world.
After watching the new Speed 2 trailer again last night I have finally found my answer: Keanu Reeves is actually in Speed 2, but he is not the star of it. According to the latest news, Keanu Reeves has been dropped from the sequel to Speed, and will instead be joined by Harrison Ford and J. Abrams. This is an interesting development in itself, but what really makes it intriguing is how Keanu is being portrayed in the trailer. He is no longer the lead character, he is merely the love interest.
This could mean that Keanu is now going to play a role that is less dramatic than Harrison Ford and is now being subservient to him in the film. Why else would Harrison Ford and JJ Abrams take over the lead role? The only other real possibility would be that Keanu has an important role to play, but is not as important as Harrison Ford and JJ Abrams in this version of Speed. And if that is the case, then we may see some interesting things happen with Keanu, just what he does is completely open to interpretation, but let's speculate.
First off, the most likely scenario, is that Keanu is an agent for some reason, or at least he has some influence. This could be seen in many ways, one of the most prominent ways is that Keanu is now the love interest. In Speed 2, Keanu plays the straight man who is in love with the female lead. Now, obviously in this role, Keanu is being portrayed by George Clooney. But I think that Keanu Reeves is the most likable version of Keanu Reeves and the most appealing version of Keanu Reeves to Harrison Ford. So in the sequel to Speed, Keanu is no longer the guy who gets in your face and gives advice. He is more of a love interest, and in this role, it is easier to see Keanu Reeves as John McClane.
The second way that Keanu could play a role is that he could be the villain of the movie, in which case he may do a ton of fighting in the movie, which of course is no problem for Keanu.
What is the definition of speed?
How do you know that you aren't traveling at 99.
999999% of the speed of light?
Quote: The speed of light in a vacuum is 299,792,458 metres per second (km/s). The speed of light as a function of time is: I've read on Wikipedia where they say there are no laws of physics that say the speed of light is a constant, and other places on Wikipedia where they say that this is the case (as well). However, the most popular theory states that the speed of light is constant in all frames of reference. In other words, it will not change over time, and this is one of the three postulates of Special Relativity. This means that no matter what frame of reference we are, the speed of light (as measured by us) has not changed over time. (One other postulate states that no information can travel faster than the speed of light.)
So there is no way that we can be traveling at 100% of the speed of light, because the speed of light is a constant. This leaves the question of how do we know that we aren't traveling at, for example, 99.9999999% of the speed of light, if we don't have any way of measuring this? How do we know that if we are traveling at 99.9999999% of the speed of light, that the rest of the universe would still perceive this to be 99. Is there answer to this?
It's like your saying that a car travels at 200 mph and is moving at 99.999999999% of the speed of light, yet if we measure the speed of the car it will only be 99. It's impossible to be traveling at 99.999999999% of the speed of light yet measure it's speed to be less than that. So how can you "know" you're not going more than 99. If you did go beyond 99.999999999%, how could you measure it? How would you measure it if it was beyond 99.
Why is the movie speed so good?
How'd they make such fantastic explosions?
And, above all, what is he doing in my shower?"
D'Errico, however, believes that there's more to it than just talent or good luck. If you watch a movie enough times, something happens and you start to see patterns. With The Matrix, it became obvious to him that the first two minutes of every movie, even if it only lasts for two seconds, are actually crucial to the story. That first scene always sets the scene for whatever is happening in the rest of the film, says D'Errico. "In the first scene of any good movie, if it's not completely absurd, we know that everything that follows is going to be totally plausible. If it's completely implausible, it must be a complete waste of time."
I like this explanation, but I'm more interested in why people like to watch these films over and over again than how they're able to do it. To help me explain the mystery, I turned to David Scheffler, a film historian who's written about film theory, the psychology of genre, and other esoteric topics. I had never heard Scheffler's theories before, but when I called him, he came up with some great ideas.
According to Scheffler, who got his Ph. From Johns Hopkins University, our love of movies isn't a question of whether or not we're crazy. "There's nothing wrong with being obsessed with something," says Scheffler. "My son loves Star Wars. He doesn't know anything about Luke Skywalker. But I would say that obsessive interest is a good thing, whereas when one is obsessed, it indicates a pathology. When someone feels passionate about something like reading or math, you don't go around calling people 'crazy' because they're passionately committed to what they're doing. This is why people keep going back to The Matrix or James Cameron or the people that made Alien in the '70s."
So what did Scheffler say happened when we fall in love with a work of fiction? Scheffler explains that it's not that the movie makes us feel good about life (or hell, I don't care what this theory says, what about that trailer!); it's that when a movie's "good enough"a definition Scheffler providesit creates some sort of emotional reaction, an emotional response.
