How do I use PureVPN with OpenVPN?

PureVPN has created a simple guide on how to configure OpenVPN for the Raspberry Pi.

This includes setting up OpenVPN server, enabling OpenVPN on the router and configuring client configuration.

This guide is for the latest version of PureVPN and OpenVPN (OpenVPN 2.4) but will still work for previous versions.

Setting up the OpenVPN server. When setting up the OpenVPN server, PureVPN has created a default configuration which includes many features such as TLS authentication, compression, rate limiting and split tunneling. You can modify this or create your own custom configuration.

First, we need to install and configure OpenVPN. The PureVPN guide is pretty straightforward and can be found here. However, you can follow my guide instead if you prefer. It's the same process except I have written a little more detail about each step.

Now that OpenVPN is installed, you need to configure it on your Raspberry Pi using the pure-vpn-server.conf configuration file. This configuration file is found in /etc/openvpn. If you have another configuration file, then you need to copy that to /etc/openvpn.

You can modify the options in this file as you need. For example, you may want to remove the noauth option, so your Raspberry Pi does not have a username/password set for the OpenVPN server. If you don't want TLS authentication, you can simply remove the line:

Tls-auth ta.key 1 In this case, theta.key will be replaced with your own user's private key and ta.key will be replaced with your OpenVPN server's public key.

You can remove the following lines if you don't want OpenVPN to limit the connection speed or if you want to enable split tunneling. Client-max-rate 100Mbit. Client-buffer-limit 32k. Tun-mtu 1500. Tun-mtu-extra 1500. Once you have changed all the options to suit your needs, save the file and restart OpenVPN. We can now set the IP address of our Raspberry Pi OpenVPN server. If you can't remember the IP address, then you can use the following command.

Route add -net 10.8.0 netmask 255.

How to setup PureVPN on Linux?

Step 1 - Install OpenVPN. We'll start with setting up OpenVPN. Open the terminal and type the following: yum -y install epel-release. Next, open the following page for your version of Linux: Click on downloads. Follow the instructions and you'll be able to download the latest version of openssh. Now open the terminal again and type the following:

Yum install openssh-server. You're now going to install the latest OpenVPN version for your version of linux. Open up a second terminal and install OpenVPN on your Linux computer.

Run the following command: wget. This downloads the openvpn package into a folder called openvpn-2.7.gz

Now in your terminal run the following command: cd openvpn-2.7/ Next, extract the tar.gz archive using the following command: tar xvfz openvpn-2.gz This extracts the tar.gz into the openvpn folder. You can skip this step if you have installed OpenVPN before.

Next, edit the files inside the openvpn folder that is created by extracting the package. Go ahead and open the following file: /etc/default/openvpn. Save it (as root) with the .dpkg extension.

Here, you will have a server.conf file.
