Why is my VPN connected but no internet access?

A few days ago, my VPN suddenly started working, but without internet.

I tried everything to get it fixed, but it was no use. I don't even have an IP address assigned to me and I can't connect to anything either. I tried to reset my modem's settings, but to no avail. My network manager is not working, too. I have a wired connection.

The first thing I would do is restart the DHCP server and DHCP client. In this order: sudo service isc-dhcp-server restart. Sudo service isc-dhcp-client restart. If you're still having problems after doing this, please post the contents of your /etc/default/isc-dhcp-server file. I'm sorry to say this but as I don't have experience with this it would be very hard to help you. I suggest you just reinstall Windows and forget about Linux in general.

Hi and welcome to the forums, I'm guessing you have a router / firewall between the two networks? You'll need to configure the router to send all internet traffic (from the Internet to your laptop) via the VPN.

I use a VPN for all my online activities, yet I always encounter problems when using my mobile data.

For example, when I use an application which require access to the internet, such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Youtube etc., the data from the app stop working immediately after the VPN connection.

This was my workaround: Open your VPN Connection (VPN Connection is already open by default). In settings there is an option "Data Saving" under "VPN Settings". Toggle it OFF. Restart your phone. Switch the setting back to ON. You should be able to use your data again.

I'm not sure if it will help, but I'm having the same issue with the same application. If you go into your settings and make sure that "Enable Network Location" is checked, then that might fix it for you.

You have to find out what's causing the problem. If you use a VPN you're already behind a NAT box, so chances are they're blocking your traffic. To test this, you can try disabling the VPN and connecting with another means of internet connectivity. If you can still access the content, then you know your problem lies with the VPN.
