How many attempts until iPhone is permanently locked?

But what is the number of times it has to be reported before a permanent lock issued? How many times do they try to remotely unlock the phone and have it not work? If a 3rd party device is used to unlock the phone, then I assume that does not count as a reported lost or stolen phone. Does it take them 24 hours to figure out that it's a stolen phone? Does it take them 7 days to figure it's a lost phone? Does Apple get back to the user after each attempt at unlocking the phone?
