Should I turn on VPN on iPhone?

My mother, who is a very technologically capable woman, and her friends, all of whom are very technologically minded individuals, ask me to turn on their VPN ( Virtual Private Network ) on their iPhone. Here are a few reasons for and against the setting up of VPN on an iPhone. Arguments in favour: It will help them to access restricted web sites, which might not be possible otherwise. It will help them to access certain streaming services, like Netflix. Arguments against: It would give my mother (and other people around her) the impression that she can access all the data she wants whenever she wants. It might slow down the network because there will be more traffic than what it should be. What should I do? I'm going to say "it depends." Your mother and her friends probably need a VPN because their connection to the Internet and to the iTunes Store is not secure. You could also use a VPN at home. Or at work. Maybe both. And you could keep the VPN turned on your own devices, just for privacy. Or you could use a tool like Hamachi that would allow your friends to remotely access your device. That's handy if you don't have WiFi or cellular at home or work, and is easy enough to get.

It sounds like they're getting a lot of data now, when they shouldn't be. They should consider purchasing a prepaid SIM card for your mom.

How do I setup a private VPN on my iPhone?

You'll need to set up a VPN on your computer using a VPN client and then transfer that to your iOS device.

This would not be a trivial task, as you would need to make sure your iOS device is setup to access the VPN in order to be able to use it. However, VPN's are meant to provide you with an encrypted tunnel to your computer, so why do you need to make sure your iOS device is setup to connect to it, unless you want to?
That being said, some VPN clients provide a feature which makes it easy to create and transfer the connection to the device. The most common method I have seen used for this is to allow your VPN client to create a configuration file, which you then copy to your iOS device. Once connected, you can simply open the settings application and select VPN and then select the configuration file.

It's just me.

I am going to have a hard time believing that you are willing to pay a monthly fee for a service that is just a simple VPN, just in case you aren't aware. Why bother? People who need to access work files. There are people who rely on internet in places where they have no option of using wifi (ie, while traveling). There are people who want to access the internet even when they are offline, just in case their wifi connection falls down. In this case, an iPhone is a very cheap solution. I have a mac, and my iMac has always had VPN capability built into it (for years, no less) and it's all free. It might be that this wasn't possible with iOS, until now. Does anyone know? I would love to see these guys pull it off - if there's a chance at all, I'd use it like a charm. They also include "a number of tools, including an ad blocker and a way to turn off ads on Facebook, Apple's iCloud Photo Library, and iAds" (source) but the real question is why this is a necessity for me? I don't do things like create files online; I work on websites and have no reason to pay for services that I will never need. What are all of the reasons you have to pay for vpn when your iPhone? I've been a heavy iPad user for years and the only reason I've needed VPN on my iPad was one-off business trips. I've never seen the need on the iPhone.

I want to be able to access my personal files, while I'm away from my wifi connection. I was doing that before with a USB stick but I'm paying for the data plan and my phone bill already makes me go to work.
