Does bad batch season 2 end with a cliffhanger?
In other words, when did things start to fall apart for the crew of Bad Batch?
And what do we have to look forward to in season 3? Hit the jump to find out.
Warning: There are spoilers from season 2 (and possibly some season 3 spoilers) for Bad Batch. If you haven't seen it yet, I'd strongly suggest you either not read any further or catch up first.
I got a lot of questions asking why I didn't do a season 2 review with the same rules as season 1. I think that's a fair question, and so I figured out the best way to answer it. When I wrote a season review, I wrote my review based on the show, and only after that was when I'd go and watch the season again. This is the best way to watch television, and even though season 2 was far from perfect, it was still far more watchable than some of the recent shows like Black Mirror or 13 Reasons Why.
So if I'm writing season reviews, it'll be very different from the previous two seasons in this column. Here, I'm going to write a season review for each episode, and then go back to watch it before doing a new review. That way, it will be very different from my earlier reviews.
To get to my analysis of this week's season finale of Bad Batch, let's start with this week's epidome. You're probably expecting me to tell you that all ended well and things were fixed. It doesn't quite work that way. The finale begins with the episode starting to come to a close, and that's when things went haywire.
This week's epidome begins with an old friend and her new boyfriend trying to find help to start up a business. In fact, they've just barely started the process of starting up a business when their car breaks down. They come across a stranger with a car, who offers to help them. But when he asks for a payment in return, they get scared and want to leave the guy, only to find themselves in the middle of a drug-smuggling scene.
What happens in the season 2 finale of bad batch?
How are the relationships of the new kids doing?
Spoilers ahead. There are currently six characters on the show - Sookie (Anna Paquin), Bill (Stephen Moyer), Sam (Sam Trammell), Eric (Alexander Skarsgard), Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) and Lafayette (Nate Corddry). Sookie and Bill have been the constants since the beginning, while each one of the four new characters has only been on for a short while. We've also now established the dynamic of the group as a whole, and their friendship is one of the most interesting aspects of the series so far. That's all this episode was about - exploring these new friendships and how they all fit together. Sookie isn't too keen to join them, she still wants a normal life while maintaining the faerie connection; she's wary of Eric because she knows he has a blood lust for Sookie; and while Lafayette has nothing against these young bloodsucker humans, he certainly doesn't like Sookie much. Eric and Sookie had such a strong connection at first that it seems logical that he'd make her a vampire when he does turn her; however, he doesn't want to do that anymore. It's not even clear if he even can, and there's certainly no guarantee that Eric would do it for any other reason than to keep Sookie safe and with him. It looks like his reasons for saving her at the end of the previous episode have changed. I don't think he'll be too surprised when Sam shoots him in the finale though.
Meanwhile, Sam has no reservations about siding with Sookie and Eric - at least until the very end. He's become completely devoted to protecting Sookie and Eric, which I think explains his behavior in the first two episodes. Like anyone else, he wants what's best for Sookie, but now he sees how her life is going. She's lost a lot and needs help. When you watch this episode - if you haven't already - you'll see that when Lafayette gets shot, it appears he drops into the puddle of blood, which is symbolic of his transition from being a human boy who lives in the suburbs to a half-faerie vampire.
