What needs to be declared at customs?

I have been wondering lately, if you know it or not.

If you are bringing your personal stuff back into the USA from a country, as well as the commercial stuff you bought, is anything required to be declared at customs? For example, if I have a big ol' bag of computer parts that I picked up, they are obviously going to get opened and examined, because I am not bringing them into the country. Customs would probably just say, "Fine. Show us where it is."
